I had the same problem, but I had installed my V3i drivers instead of a program. XP  woulnt boot, but Vista will. So now I'm stuck there. FIXBOOT, and FIXMBR didn't work. Trying to fix the XP partition has left it hanging on 33% complete after the first reboot. I'm completely stuck, I have no ideas left in my head except replacing the drive  completely.

Cheers

I just went through this in another thread. I had a Sata driver cause the boot problem. Finally fixed the driver so the computer would boot,  but the computer would constantly hang.

Finally bit the bullet and reformatted the drive.

CT & Richard, did you read my footnote "Modify" inserted rather belately?

Got it going by flook I guess in trying anything I could master.

The Recovery Console would not work, but the Repair XP did. Then found that the first time I click "F8" gives the Boot media choices and if I click again "F8" it goes into the various start up methods menu.

I chose the "....last known good boot...." something, and never looked back.

Was lucky not to reformat C:\, only lost sp2 with repair, which I installed later.

Perhaps if you try same as me you may hit lucky.

Wrote a stincking letter to B.Bank not to push out malicious letters and programs.

I have SP-2 slipstreamed, buy don't remember which program I used.

F8 gave me the same options, which drive do I want to boot from, could not get into safe mode.

The repair option never appeared. Although there was a bootable OS on the drive I never had the opportunity to do a repair.

Worked on it for a week and finally gave up and formatted.

If you can remember how to fit "xp PRO sp2" into a CD let me know.

For repair you boot with the XP CD, and gives you the 2 repair options.

Luckyly I got away with it.

Anybody knows what is causing this malfanction?
