Cooling things down

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a better cooler for my P4. The out of the box fan that came with it is, I'm afraid, not up for the task. Temps are running a little high while running FS or similar 'heavy' programs. Temperatures go up to 70C/158F. Also I would like the noise that fan is making greatly reduced. So what do you recommend for a good, silent cooler?

Mine is way cooler when running anything heavy on the system...Max I've seen it go is 56...

The temperature hovers around 40C on idle or just using the internet or something like that. The CPU fan has an RPM of around 2900-3000. It's with software like FS that thing go hot very fast. The fan starts spinning faster (up to 4500RPM) and really starts to sound like a vacuumcleaner. I have a small program called SensorViewPro 2.1 that gives of an alarm when temperatures go to high and monitors all other temps inside my pc. When flying the CPU peaks at 70C for only a few seconds then the temperature drops down to 55-60C. So if I can keep things cool from the start maybe that peak won't be reached.

I have a stock Intel cooler on my P4 Crash, and had the same problem as you. I solved it by removing the heatsink and fan assembly, gave them both a good clean and reapplied some new thermal paste (good quality silver compound).

70 degrees and 4000 rpm. That's insane.

Clean the heatsink and CPU and apply new thermal paste. I recommend Arctic Silver 5 or OCZ Ultra 5.

Cleaning the HSF and adding thermalpaste only will do so much. I suggest grabing a Zalman CNPS-7000Cu or CNPS-9500Cu to cool it.

For thermalpaste go with Artic Cremique. Its non conductive.

Cheesegrater, the heatsink doesn't need to be cleaned. I forgot to mention it's only been 4 days in use.

If he didn't overclock 70 degrees is insane on stock speeds. Sounds like bad installation unless it is overclocked. When I said I had 55 degrees on my Northwood you suggested I installed it wrong.

It doesn't matter how long it was in use, it is gonna have leftover thermal paste on it.

Take a better look Cheese. First off, a prescott (what he has, due to the fact that he has had it for four days) will idke at 40*C+ and reach 70*C+ on a stock cooler. I know I had one.

@Crash, if you go for the CNPS-7000Cu make sure to get the LGA775 mounting bracket with it, as it dosn't come with it.

Is your case ventilation up to scratch?

You can test it by removing the side cover and seeing if your temps drop perhaps.

Did you look at the Zalman 9500 ?

The ventilation in the case is ok, Congo. I already tried removing the sidepanel but it does not make a big difference. Thanks for the link to that Zalman cooler.
