Running FS2004 on second hard drive,  drive D

Postby freedomhays » Sun Sep 03, 2006 4:05 am

I am replacing my MB with a new one,  I also will be installing a new hard drive.
My old hard drive has FS2004 on it and all the addons and goodies  you can imagine.
After I install the new hard drive and load Windows XP on it ,  this will be the master boot drive,  drive C.
Then I will install the old hard drive with FS2004 already on it and this will be drive D.
My question is,  can I run FS2004 off of the old drive D,  and if so how do you do it.
The new drive C will be reserved for FSX.
Thanks for your thoughts on this,
Dan

I use the same "trick" for much of my software. I'll try to outline it as simply as possible.

But first, consider placing FS9 on the fastest drive if you intend on using that sim. However, I'll explain it as you outlined.

1. copy the relevant FS9 files and folders from your documents folders in C: drive, this includes fs9.cfg and flights etc, etc.

2. install the new drive with windows and install the old drive so that it can be seen in the new windows system.

3. rename the old FS9 folder to FS9.bak or similar.

4. Install a new installation of FS9 to the exact location where your current FS9 is, it won't overwrite the old copy if you've correctly renamed the folder to something else.

5. Rename the new FS9 folder to FS9.new, then rename the old FS9.bak folder back to it's original FS9 name, making sure it's in the exact same directory as the new install of the sim, in other words, swap the new FS9 folder with your old one.

6. Run the sim, close it down, then replace the FS9 files from your documents folder on the new drive with the old ones you had saved, (or that you just left intact on the old C: drive ).

7. Decide on whether to delete the new FS9.new folder that the fresh install created, or just save it as a backup of original

I want to run executables from the old disk such as Microsoft FS2004,
I have tons of addons and goodies and I want to use the new disk just for internet and photo,  movie editing and other etc.

I did a search on the boot.ini,  very helpful,  If I edit the boot.ini file it will work.
Thanks,  Dan

You can add your old drive AFTER you install the new one and select the boot drive from bios so you may boot from the old drive if you wish to, providing that you can run your old windows on the new Rig and re-activate windows.
