DVD-RW doesn't like Memorex?

Very odd... I usually buy Fuji blanks, but got a good price on a stack of Memorex CD-Rs, so I decided to try them. But my burner does not recognize them as discs...keeps asking me to insert a disc.
Tried to just play one fromthe same stack that has just been recorded on and formatted with my friend's burner... same deal. won't ask me anything except to insert a disc. In his machine, it works just fine.

All my formatted Fuji DVDs and CDs still work fine, and a blank Fuji gives me a prompt to format, not the "please insert disc" error.

I have a few old Memorex discs that were formatted and finalized on my friend's machine, and they play just fine. Listening to one right now, and now that I think about it, I think I duped this on my PC, with this same unit. Weird.

The discs are 52X type, which normally this drive can handle. The old Memorex disc it's playing right now is also a 52X.

Lite-On's tech support is a joke, and a search has yielded nothing.
Anybody have any idea what's going on here?
Gremlins?
Drivers need updating?
 Should I fetch a hammer?

did you update the Lite-on firmware?

i have a lite-on DVD+RW and updating the firmware enabled me to play an encrypted DVD i've been having trouble with.

try that, if not, mabye they are bad disc's. I prefer NeXXtech DVD's, no problems there.

No, I didn't update yet, but I may try it.

If these discs are bad, why do they work in my friend's tired old Sony burner, but not my Lite-On?

ahh, i read that part wrong, i thought you said it wont read on his drive either, my mistake.

another thought, any problems with the +R and the -R formats? if the drive is old, it probably only accepts one of the formats, most like -R since that was the industry standard.

Staples brand all the way. Yea yea, I know I work for them, but seriously they are good stuff. Hell they are made by HP.

Cheers

I dunno... it's about 2 years old. they ought to mark the discs, or something...  >:(

I have to look into this... meanwhile I've given the Memorex discs to my buddy- I owed him some $$ anyway.

EDIT: just checked; it's compatible with both formats.

rottydaddy,

I had a similar situation, then I bought a new burner, no problem.

I don't know what a burner cost in the UK, but they are $45 here, or 18.5 British pounds..... so it's not the end of the world.

Indeed, it's only money...;D
Dollars, that is- don't know why you mentioned UK prices, as I live in the USA...  ;) ;D
I'm not upset, but I would be if I replaced this unit and it still wouldn't work with those discs!

This rig will soon be my #2, used mostly for Internet and playing media... if I have any more trouble with the burner, I'll probably swap it out later.
Until then, no more Memorex. :P

Eeek!

Sorry about that, thought you were from the U.K. for some reason.

Early onset senility on my part :P

Yeah, I was having trouble with some disks, then I got a cheap new fangled - does everything super multi burner and haven't looked back, it's a trick I learned from a mate years ago. First sign of trouble with an optical drive, order a new one!

It's so cheap now to do that, It's hardly worth going to the trouble of faultfinding, and so far, a new burner has always solved the problem for me.
