what the... my ram... this is odd...

I just bought 2 x 256's for my computer to now equal 1.5gb of RAM. my original was 2 x 512's.

my System performance rating went from 3.1 to 2.0, dropping my rating to a 2!!! the RAM was the lowest on my scale, with eveything being a 3.7 or higher (besides Hard drive, which will change later when i install XP.)

what happened? it's the same ram, DDR 333 PC2700.

mabye it's a configuration thing? here's the setup:

1: 512
2: 256
--------
3: 512
4: 256

are the 2 512's & the 2 256's supposed to be together or is it bad RAM?

no silly... your mixing sticks so your system has lost its ability to interleave and run them @ spec.

For XP, always buy memory in sets of 2... nothing more. If you want 2 gigs of memory, you must buy 2 1 gig sticks and place them in the correct slots so you have the full speed of the memory + interleave.

Check your motherboard manual.. it will probably tell you what slots must NOT be populated for full support at the rated speed of the memory.

Check your motherboard manual... I think if you populate slots 2 and 4 with anything, you loose.

well.. there you have it... also, on some motherboards populating 4 slots will force DDR to drop

You must install 4 512 modules and all of them MUST be eother double sided or single sided or you loose dual channel.


I managed to DL the manual... it does not say populating sockets will force lower DDR... you are simply dealing with mixed modules

yep... I would think you are running double sided 512's in 1-3 so you need double sided 512's for 3-4

I would verify and check the memory by the numbers on the 512 sticks though to confirm DS/SS

anyway, yeah i took that RAM out pretty quick when my computer started constantly rebooting. thank god for laptop, RAM's out, and the computer is rebooting, and looking good.
