AMD buys Canada's ATI Technologies
SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 24 (UPI) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. of California is paying $5.4 billion to buy ATI Technologies Inc., which has headquarters in Markham, Ontario.
AMD, the nemesis of chip industry leader Intel Corp., is buying ATI for its strengths in graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics, the Sunnyvale, Calif., company said Monday.
AMD, which will pay $4.2 billion in cash and 57 million shares of common stock, has a $2.5 billion term loan commitment from Morgan Stanley Senior Funding, Inc. which it will combine with existing cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments balances of some $3 billion.
Layoffs may be coming: AMD said it will cut operating expenses by $75 million for the combined company by the end of next year.
