Alright I admit I am an idiot, upon checking my computer to install a beautiful new Zalman CPU Heatsink, My computer would not turn back on and boot up, All I did was install the case fan, check the CPU (As in pull it out but I put it back in right) and put everything back to normal to come on simvi and ask how to install the heatsink/fan..... Well, my LED light on the front flashed, I unplugged the new fan, and whalla, Worked? NO!!! It said it couldnt boot windows, tried normally, no go, I tried to restore, and got some USB.Sys error with the classical Windows stopped system to prevent damage blah blah blah..... I am at library comp typing this now, I need help, I tried restoring on 3 hard drives, Took everything out to stock, including PSU, and still, Half way through a restore, I get the bloody windows blue screen! I shut the system off in working order, Did the fan somehow fry the MB? In the bios EVERYTHING, is detected the way it should be...... But I cannot get windows to work.. Please PLEASE give me some idea on what the hell I did wrong...... Everything works, just no windows.....! Do I need a new MB and a real Windows copy? A MS-Dos Floppy to run WITH my restore disk? I need some type of help, I dont think I killed it....... But..... it wont run, and restoring it I got it all the way through The setup up process, and it froze..... so something is wrong, and ocassionally my computer just restarts Windows maybe? Maybe somebody here can help me! Cheers, Gunny the Idiot.....

Based on the temps I saw you post in another thread I think it is very possible you have a whacked processor. Windows install blue screen errors are usually caused by the following items in order of occurrence:

1. Bad CD read (scratched or bad burn CD)
2. Bad 3rd party driver or improperly laid out on disk
3. Improper memory settings or overclocked memory settings
4. Improper CPU settings or overclocked CPU settings
5. Overheated processor
6. Defective Memory
7. Defective Processor
8. Defective hard drive or cable
9. Defective motherboard

Based on the fact that everything was working up to messing with the fans I would say one of the three has happened:

1. Overheating processor due to a bad HSF install
2. Damaged processor due to having it run hot for so long.
3. Both of the above

Make sure the Windows CD is not all scratched up...

Re-verify the HSF install... take it all off and put it back together carefully using thermal compound.

Make sure the fans are indeed running.

.....but it sounds to me like the proc finally gave up the ghost after running so hot.

Thats exactly what it sounds like to me. We warned ya dude, running a processer like that for that long will severly damage it. It only sucks that now when you finally get a Zalman for it, it dies.

I DID NOT I REPEAT DID NOT CHANGE THE HEATSINK ONLY A CASE FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! It did not overheat I know that for a fact.... if it did, it would have the day I bought it, I think a short circuit went through the Motherboard, My CPU is as sound as can be..... My dad cut the wires on the fan and added some, and I believe it shorted something, I told him NOT to do it, but he wouldnt listen, the disk isnt scratched, and EVERYTHING works, except there isnt an OS on my computer..... There are probably thousands of computers of the same model that will last for several years on those temps without even being dusted.... I do know, something isnt right, I do know my Soundcard was acting up, its the only thing I havent pulled yet, Also I just replaced a bad IDE cable to the hard drive, maybe another one? only it DIDNT detect the hard drives, everything in the bios Runs fine.... I did take my heatsink off and looked for a way to install the zalman, but I couldnt figure out if I needed to take the motherboard off or not, hooked original back up, Put the now Rigged fan (Case fan) on and started it up...... and a some type of OS Error to select how to boot windows, Wouldnt boot up.... I think I'll end up figuring it out myself..... Cheers, Gunny

Check your BIOS for your boot sequeance.

I had the same thing happen to me the last time I had my case apart and it disconected from a power source, it reset bios and then reported it couldn't locate my hard drives, what happened is it forgot I had a RAID setup.

Hiya Gunny, no your NOT a moron. A true moron wouldn't have gotten as far as you have. (smile)
Sounds like a hardware short somewhere, prolly in the wiring between the new fan and the motherboard. XP hates hardware issues and will blue screen every time if one is detected. Other than that signed drivers are at issue but this is not your problem as described... Try checking the pinout assignments on the fan. Make sure the fan is plugged directly into a proper power take off (generic 4 prong type) or if it's a board type, make sure it isn't loose and that the position on the mainboard supports it.

If you have a RAID, unsigned drivers will throw a fit and blue screen as well (XPSP2). In short (no pun intended) try disconnecting the fan, and boot to safe mode. If you make it to the windows screen, just reboot immediately and you will force windows to behave (in most cases).
Oh, and remove the wires you're father installed unless you really really need them. If the power plug for the fan did not fit anywhere on your system, there is reason for it.
