i got a job in my school district (more info in the cafe forum)

any other mac users out there? i got a question:

how much does mac desktop hardware differ from PC hardware, in all apects. we are dealing with emacs, and they are installing tiger 10.4.6 on them.

i just need to know what the hardware/install difference. i may be trained, but i would also like an outside oipinion for those who know.

Just because you said my name, I have to comment.

However I did once watch my Web Design teacher (die hard Mac addict) crack open an eMac. The hardware is harder to find, but as far as installing goes, same as a PC upgrade. Only difference is that you don't need to install new drivers. For the GPU, I don't know if its upgradeable in the eMac or iMac due to the built in moniter. If so, there's probibly some extra wiring to do.

PS: I did find the only thing I like about Mac, besides playing with frontrow and hitting F9 and F10 repedadly. I had to call Apple Care today to reup my mothers iPod care, and low and behold I got an American in America to talk to. I thought I was dreaming, so I called various different departments. All across the board Americans, and a few Englishmen. As far as customer support goes Mac all the way. However if your a proper geek you shouldn't even have to call tech support.

The problem is when they did put that intel in a PC, it didn't do anything impressive. However an intel Mac will boot twice as fast (if not three times) as a normal Mac.

There is a whole project somewhere dedicated to getting OSX running on x86 hardware (normal PCs) and they have succeeded. It is however illegal unless you are an apple developer as far as I know

like i said, it was for experimental purposes on a school computer. now you can't find it on OSX86project, cause that would be blatantly illegal. you have to do a torrent for it.

i got rid of my torrent when it was done, and i've lost the CD by now, but it was cool, and weird, especially when i freaked out my teacher.

i'm soo in line for a first copy if apple decides to license it. it will pretty much be the first time that apple follow's in uncle bill's footsteps.

Buying one
Base level MiniMac: $500
Base Level OEM PC: $300 (includes moniter)

Upgrading one
Mac: Throw it out, buy a new one.
PC: Go to Newegg.com and pick out your parts. Many regular stores sell them too.

Setting one up.
Mac: Plug it in. Press power, wate 10~20 minutes, start actual software setup. Plug in all your printers digital camera's etc, find out that there isn't a driver for your new Motorola L7 (iTunes phone). Bitch the computer out for not having your driver, and bitch out the modding community for not giving a flying f*** about macs

PC: Plug it in, press power, wate 1~5 minutes. Start software setup. Install all drivers. Thank god that the third party loves and works on PCs as you mod your L7 to be really cool.

Viruses:
Mac: None, but then again who wants to screw up a Mac any more than it already is?

PC: about 200,000 a year, however if you have even the slightest bit of knowladge, you know how clean your computer.

Software:
Mac: iLife, iGurd, iTunes, basically if it starts with "i" which is about 10 pieces of software. Oh ya and then everything Adobe makes.

PC: I lost count at about 999,999,999,999 and thats only the payware, there are billions of freeware apps.

Useing it:
Mac: Its like being on a limited user account, but you can install new software. Also its widget heven.

PC: I <3 Microsoft.

Crashing
Mac: Try deleting something. System locks up, unplug, reboot. 30 Minutes later after trying to open IE it happens again.

PC: Run too many apps, and it happens. Ctrl+Alt+Del ususally fixes everything. You can also try Alt+Tab.  Still no luck reboot. And anyone with the blue screen of death just dosn't know how to use a PC.


I would say thats about as clear as it gets.

Actually Macs have had Plug and Play for so long that they never even bothered to think up a name for it.

The only reason the iTunes phone wouldn't work on a mac is if was set up on a windows computer first. The same applies to iPods.



I have a friend thats just brought an intel Macbook. I look forward to using it.

No what I ment on the L7 was that you could connect it to iTunes, however you couldn't install Motorola Phone Tools, or P2K Tools to transfer things like pictures, themes for the phone, and custom ringtones.

ok i want to know who has the audacity to create an itunes phone that cant connect to a mac.

it's like creating a pocketPC that doesn't sync to PC's...

No the phone will connect to iTunes. However you cant use any of the other tools that a PC user would be able to. So you can put your music on it, but you cant put your pics, movies, modd the Seems, or do anything really fun with it.
