Will the AMD dual-core (Manchester) 3800+ cpu work on my board? My board is a 939-pin thing with a 2000 MHz bus (I think). Techies' answers welcomed.

Will it work? Yes. Is it worth putting that processer in an eMachine or any machine? No.

That simple.

What do you mean that it is not worth putting "that processer" in any machine, let alone into mine? I take it you have no love for AMD processors? I like Fords. You like Chevies. Thank God for differing opinions...

No its not that. However its basically taking two of your current processers, slowing them down a bit, cramming them together, and putting it in. Its just not worth it. Look at the 4400+ as a starting point for Dual core. or a 3700+ for single.

Whether or not it's worth it is secondary. All you've said about your board is that it's a 939. Not all 939 boards support dual-core 939 CPUs..

(more info needed) (but I doubt an eMachine board will support a dual-core CPU)

The problem is the chip will probably work but only as a single core unless E-Machine has a bios update to activate the dual core function.

And that is highly unlikely.

Didn't even think of that.

So in conclusion, just don't bother with it. If your looking to upgrade, just build from the ground up.

custom built. and i made it easy to upgrade if needed.

CTjoyce is right, go for a 3700 single or a 4400 dual if planning to upgrade, but A: eMachines SUCK, and B: i bet they do the same as dell, you cant Overclock and cant upgrade. i know, i fix many an emachine (as well as many a dell)

I didn't know my machine SUCKed. It's been working fine for over a year, although lately it has slowed down because it has become infected with something I'm sure, now that Mr. Norton has left town. I thought about a single-core 3800, then saw some info that this dual-core might/would work. I did some browsing and found that indeed, it will work.

No ground-up machines for me. I did that four years ago and never again.

The board mooonlights as an MSI 480 something. I found several websites and reviews indicating it will work in this machine.

My needs are simple. I need to run FS2004 at a goodly frame rate and send emails. I am not launching our nuclear missiles from my desktop and I don't need to impress anyone with my computer. If I am satisfied, I am satisfied...

i totally hear ya. i was just throwing my opinion out there. Cause my previous encounters with these things lead me to believe that this is as cheap as your gonna get. (again my opinion) I also moved away from dell cause you physically cant upgrade any major component. it's propriatery (apologies for spelling) components, and if you want to replace one, you have to replace all of it.

hence why i moved away from Dell, and any other "bundle" companies.

all in all, to each his own.

I knew Dells were proprietary. I think if anybody knew that before buying one, nobody would.
