help, with choosing stuff for new computer(urgent)

Postby Ghostrider114 » Sat Jun 03, 2006 11:18 pm

Hi,
I just graduated yesterday and my dad and I are going to Fry's Electronics tomarrow to pick out my "graduation present."  Anyway we talked and he said I could get a new computer, probably a kit similar to the ShuttleX box I have now.  So one question we have is: which would be better for gaming, one of those new x86-64 AMD processors or a 32 bit Intel?  I think both have hyper threading but that is all I know and my dad is concerned that if I get the 64 bit i wont be able to use it to its full potental for a few years because there arn't many games out, that are designed for it yet.
Like I said I am going to buy a computer tomarrow and I need to know post-haste

AMD 3700+
PCI-E x16 Motherboard
1GB of RAM
SATA HDD
nVidia 6800 / X800GTO or better

Basically thats what you need for current FS9, and even FSX and Vista. As far as 64 bit stuff goes, currently Apps don't use it, however its one of those things where its better to have it now than to worry about upgradeing later.

Anyway something like that will run you about $1000 or more depending on what else it has in it.

Cheers

A 3800+ x2? Meh its hardly worth it. The only 939 AMD dual core processers I would look at are the 4400+ and teh 4800+ and ofcourse the FX-60.  The problem with the rest is that they were made to go into number crunching machines and therefore the L2 cache is too smal..

we finally got it today and we will put it together tonight.  Thanks for the suggestions.
we went  with a Pentium D 930 dual core processor.  Over all it was a better deal and me and my dad decided that by the time games that fully support the 64 come out, the 64 would be obsolete so we would have to upgrade anyway, other than that we got 2 gigs of DDR2 RAM, a 200gb hard drive, an SLI compatable Motherboard and a Gforce 7600 so that I can upgrade later and have two GPUs

The 930 prestler and the 7600 really arn't worth it.  The 930 didn't preform too well in the game marks, and games will be useing 64Bit in less than a year. If anything that GPU will be useless before the CPU. Most apps are switching over to 64Bit withen a year due to vista.

I got the 7600 because it was SLI capable, my dads idea was that I could buy a second one when I get a job.  As for the processor, the main reason why we chose it was that it was $300 cheaper than the AMD and my dad felt that by the time games are 64 bit capable, someone will have a better processor like a 128 bit or something like that

All nVidia cards are Sli ready ;)

As for the processer you do know that you have a 64bit processer right? Just about everything that has come out in the past two years have been 64Bit. And 128 bit wouln't be out until 64bit has been completely stressed.

Also a AMD processer being $300 more than an intel? Which was it, cus that souds really not right.

Yes, his Pentium D 930 is 100% 64bit! Also, don't get a new graphics card till Direct X 10 is out.

He will be waiting quite a while... even if DX10 cards hit the market by Q4 of this year, I would not touch them for at least a period of time long enough for MS and the card manufactures to fix the DX10 bugs.

Just because something is due to hit the market does not mean waiting is the best choice. By the time DX10 issues are sorted out and the cost of the cards stabilize It will probably be a year+.

Personally I don't even tutch first gen tech anyway. Usually too expensive, and too buggy.
