AM2 or 939?

Postby Sukhoi_37 » Fri May 26, 2006 8:40 pm

I am in the process of building a new computer. Is AM2 really all the hype? Is there really any major differences between AM2 and 939 (except DDR2)? Any feedback is welcome.

You may as well go AM2. As far as preformance goes, your only looking at a 1% gain over 939. However thinking for the future, NF5 and DDR2 is where its at. Also the 40000+ x2 and the FX-62 are quite tastey.

Do you really have to build a new sys now?
If not, it would be wise to wait until new harware is released at yeas end.

I know, the desire to upgrade can be stong but we must resist it at times.  ;)

Joe everything is out ;) AM2 boards and processers are out, and so is nVidia's NF5 chipset. For AMD builders, now is the time to start planning, even building.

Just make sure you get a 590 board (currently the one from ASUS).

depends on your budget 939 is good for midrange to moderate high end but if your looking for max speed and upgradability am2 is the way to go.  Bear in mind that 939 won't be having any faster cpu's relesed for it of higher speed grades wheras am2 will so the performance gap will only widen.  Also bear in mind that the boards for am2 are more expensive and so are the cpus for the same level of perfomance as the 939 versions.  If you purchased a 939 3800+ rig and a am2 3800+ rig the price diffferance would be about
5900xt/2800+/280GB/1GB PC3200/Cyborg Evo Force/ABIT NF7
Gpu clock: 475mhz core, 800mhz mem
CPU at: 12.5x175 = 2187.5
memory: 2.5, 3, 3, 8 Duel channel on
Os: windows xp pro, ubuntu 5.10 breazy badger

Yeah, something is always "out".
What I was refering to was things like "conroe and DX10 cards etc..... the next major "out" :)

Personally, I upgraded last December (to an X2 4400/ X1800XT)

Conroe is in exactly 2 months, and who the heck knows when we will even see DX10 cards. You may as well not even take into account when their launch is as Vista is pushed until next may, and therefore DX10 wouln't be out till then at least.
