Socket AM2 is here, so is nForce 5

Postby ctjoyce » Tue May 23, 2006 2:12 pm

The article pretty much sums it up, but heres the short hand virsion.

AMD has finally come back at Intel. X8L is crushing the Pentium D's Prestler core in all benchmarks, with the exception of mabe one or two. However compairing the FX-62 to the benchmarks of the Conroe, Intel still will have the upper hand.

nForce 5 is going to be the board for me. With sual x16 support, and a built in SLi bridge its quite the board.  They also have a new transfer tech, so that the 7900 series will see a 20% boost in preformance. This will also carry over for the 7950 series, and 8x00 series.

And its just in time too, as I was looking for a new mobo anyway.

Cheers

Kinda disapointed with AM2.  Not a very big performance boost from 939, I'm sure AMD could have just released some new on die memory controllers that supported faster DDR1 speeds and had simlar boosts in speed.

I mentioned you might want to wait until the new motherboards hit the market.

Keep this in mind though... it might be new and improved... but it ain't tested in combat until it's been on the market for at least 6 months and all the hardware, driver and BIOS bugs have been squashed. It sometimes takes a year before a good board in a new format has been established.

Good point Nick.

I'm just going to go ahead and order my new system as it is.

The only thing your going to miss is NForce 5, which would boost the quality of your 7900GTX waay up. 20% to be exact.
