Aaaaargh... systemdisk boot failure...

No, no, no... I've seen this message a little to much lately...
My pc will suddenly reboot and stop because of a systemdisk boot failure. When I use my windows XP-disk, I can reinstall but not repair.
However, if I put the power off entirely ( instead of resetting), it starts up again. So i've backed all my files up before anything bad happens.
Any Ideas what this might be caused by?
A faulty Harddisk? But why would it restart after a shutdown?
Motherboard?
A virus? I did have a spyfalcon infection a while ago, but I succeeded in removing it.
Any suggestions?
Omag... not a happy bunny...

Maybe it's overheating causing the shutdown.

Do you have adequate airflow running through your case?
Just a thought.
Rob.

The fan is working normally... I had some suspision on my graficscard lately, but could that part cause a system bootdisk failure? A shutdown I could understand... but not the failure...

Ah yes the old System Boot Failure.
Step 1: Pop in your XP CD on boot.
Step 2: Go to the repair menu.
Step 3: Type in "FIXBOOT" (minus the "" and yes its in all caps.
Step 4: Type "EXIT"
Step 5: Reboot and log on. Then do a HDD error check, and a Defrag.
After that your system should be fine. More than likely your HDD just has a bad secter, and needs to be cleaned up.
Cheers

So, I popped in my XP-cdrom... boots normally, I don't get the repair option...
Perhaps I should wait until the problem presents itself again.
Omag... really needs to learn some basics on computers now... ;D

I don't feel comfortable without a backup system on another hard disk myself. Hard disks are inexpensive yet most people rely on a single disk :o

Eh I have XP on disk one, and Linux on disk 2. Should XP fail, I fix it with linux. And I also went out today and used my employe discount to get a 200GB Extirnal HDD for backing up my XP drive.
Anyway back to the problem, when you boot, get into your BIOS (F2 for OEMs and Del for homebuilts). Make sure that your boot order looks something like this
1: 3.5" Floppy A
2: CD Drive (or IDE / ATA drive)
3: HDD
That will make it look to boot off the XP CD insted of the HDD.
