Upgrading from IDE to SATA....

Postby 4_Series_Scania » Fri May 12, 2006 1:23 pm

Bought myself one of  these today, a Samsung SpinPoint P HD160JJ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache Hard drive.

I'm not sure how to set up an SATA drive, assuming its not simply "plug & play"

Could anybody give me some pointers before I start to dismantle my pc...

I have a Gigabyte K8NSC-939 nForce3 250GB (Socket 939) Motherboard, which supports Serial ATA with RAID 0,1 function.

Thanks.

Paul.

Make sure you enable the device in your bios (need to activate the port) too otherwise it won't be detected.

Another issue I just remembered about is, (it had me stumped for a while) you may find  that your M/B doesn't support Sata 11 , then you will have to set the jumpers on the assignment pins for Sata 1 working on the hard drive.

These pins are usually 5 to 6 that you bridge with the jumper. However check your hard drive for a layout drawing showing you the pin designations-- usually Sata 1 is denoted as 150Mbs.

First off SATA 11 dosn't exist. Its SATA II (or 2), SATA 150, and SATA 3.

Secondly SATA2 drives are hard to find nowadays. Most likely he has a 150 or 3, ithor he will be able to use.
