Heya Guys.

Right, so finally realizing that it would be less painful to remove my own heart with a rusty spoon than keep my old computer running, ive ordered a new one! So basically, I want you guys to tell me yay or nay, ok I know its a simple question, and ive seen some of your specs, but i wana know if ive got a good 'combination' so here goes!

Dell I'm guessing? Okay so heres your probles.

1: Its an OEM. So basically your paying $400 extra for someone else to take 3 weeks to build something it would take you an hour to do.

2: The 820 Smithfield is basically a dual core Prescott. Meaning high heat, and power hungry. If you must go dual core intel wate for Conroe, or look at the 900 Prestlers.

3: RAM. Im guessing because its a Dell its really crappy PNY stuff. Will die on you probibly in 2 years or less. Mine did.

4: GPU. Your expecting to game on this? Well the X600 is barely what you need. Trust me, its just above intagraded.

5: Because its an OEM, your going to get an underpowered PSU. Thats going to need replaceing.

Basically your better off just building your own system from www.newegg.com

Heres what you need.
AMD 3700+ Socket 939 / Intel Prescott 650 LGA775
ASUS A8N-32 SLi Socket 939 / ASUS P5WD2 LGA775
eVGA 7900GT PCI-Express x16
Corsair XMS PC-3200 2GB 2-2-2-5 / OCZ Gold Edition PC2-4200 2GB 3-3-3-8
Western Digital SATA3 250GB HDD
Samgsung Dual Layer DVD Burner
Zalman CNPS-9500
Zalman VFM700Cu
Thermaltake Soprano / Tusnami
Hiper Type R Power Supply (www.frozencpu.com)

Key = AMD / Inte

A system like that will run you about $1600 ~ $1800. Its vista ready (with the exception of the GPU) and about $2K less than buying from dell.

Cheers

I love reading these type of threads in this forum.

Born2fly ........... nowt wrong with that computer apart from the graphics card ........ you'd be better off with the X800 in it ...... but buy that  online after you've had the  Dell delivered, it'll be cheaper.

CTJoyce ....... you always manage to reccommend something which is outside peoples budget  this time by over

Thanks eno!

How much would the X800 be new? Would it ever be worth buying a second hand one?! I was just sort of wondering what type of graphics this could handle. I mean, could this run aircraft such as the PMDG 747 in a detailed addon airport? Easily? Ive always looked round these forums, even though I dont post much, and I was really hoping for anything near any of the shots you produce. I know its not a top-notch system, but anything is better than what im on at the moment.
Not sure how old my (current) computer actually is but definatly older than 6 years, even then it was a bog standard computer, 128mb ATi graphics card, Pentium III, and a nice little badge that always reminds me i need a new one ( Designed for Microsoft Windows 98 ) Oh joy.... :(
(It still just about manages to texture a Posky 747, but only the non detailed one, actually the only one i know it can texture is a Virgin Atlantic 'Tinkerbelle') I honestly dont know what I did! I really dont think that it could even manage that before I cleaned it up, sorted everything out, sometimes, it even surprises me what it can do.

Ok, so if this new one goes bang in 2 years, its fine! Because I got 3 years warrenty! (Free!! So much for Dell trying to blag

Ya sorry alex, didn't know you were in the UK. Wwll I (and congo) still have a moral oppasition to OEMs, www.overclockers.co.uk should have what your looking for. Also get a X800GTO, not an X800. Its only $10 more, and much better.

That's a good price for the X800 but the postage may be high ...... Try HERE for the cheapest UK prices (Free standard postage). There's also HERE... and there's plenty more sites for price comparisons.

I have a 3Ghz P4, 1Gb memory, and an X800XL for graphics .... so your spec with an X800** will be more or less the same as mine.

X600 vs X800

or

X800 vs X800GTO?

Ithor way there is a pretty wide margin. Between the X800 and X600 mostly the whole core archatexture is much better on the X800. This means better gameing.

Between the X800 and X800GTO you have a difference of 4 pixel pipelines. Basically the GTO can process information about 4 times faster than the regular X800 can.

Lol, I was actually talking about the X600 vs. the X800GTO, but seeing as there is so much difference between just the X800 and the X800GTO I think you aswered my question! One thing though, what am I going to do with my old Graphics card? How could I get rid of it, if its unboxed? eBay? Or sell it to a local computer guy? How much should I Expect to get?

Cheers

No the 512MB version is not worth it at all. They used low quality VRAM insted of the 256MB virsion which uses reputable stuff.

As for what to do with the X600, well put it in an Anti Static bag, and sell it on eBay under the title "OEM Dell ATi Radeon X600" Then set the starting price low, and dont expect more than $100 for it. $75 is probibly the most your going to get.

Cheers

Should be able to handle most of that ..... but I wouldn't bother with  Airport Enviroment Upgrade the texures can be a problem and cause lower frame rates.
