     Hey Guys and Ladies,
     Busy, Busy ,Busy,  and I bet you guys are too.     My friends,   I'm sorry I have not got back to you for a day to answer my post. I hope all is well with each of you.      Please bear with me.

     I've got all my PC parts except the OS and the power supply.  However - - -  THEY are on the way and may even get them later today or tomorrow.

     I've been looking at the different monitors and they are all nice but so confusing when I start  looking at the specks.

     I have read some about the specks on this forum  but I'm no better off now in my understanding of them.     I would appreciate it very much if I may again ask for help in this area.

     First it would be best if I set a price range so you would have that as a guide.    The other "stuff" I will leave in your hands.    [  PRICE RANGE  :  $ 250.00  ]       If needed I could go some higher.

     It would not matter to me if it is a  " CRT "  or " LCD ".  It would be used only for the SIm.      Keep in mind that I  "FLY" VFR and love exploring the scenery such as SE Alaska. I love small detail.  

     I know this is a lot of work on your part  and I sure do appreciate it VERY much.    You  "GUYS" are so helpful .

I personally like CRT monitors better, only because you can run them in any resolution and they still look good.  If you have an LCD monitor, there is a "native-resolution" that they run in and that they are built for.  It has to do with the number of pixels the screen was manufactured with, so if you run it in any other resolution, it has to account for that by making the pixels merge somewhat, which gives a blurry look to everything.  The reason that this isn't good (in my opinion) is that you have to run games and programs in the native resolution if you want them as crisp as possible, and if your computer can't run a game in that resolution, then you will have to bump the settings down, and run it in a lower resolution, with a blurry image.  Another problem with LCD monitors is they have a response time, which is a small amount of lag in the display of an image, and this can be anywhere from 4 ms up to 20 ms, which can get noticable in "twitch-gaming".  I like CRT monitors because they don't suffer from either of these problems, however, if you want a big screen, you'll have to get a big monitor, which can take up a lot of room on your desk.  CRT monitors are also giant heat factories, they can get really hot if you leave them on all day.  If you do get an LCD monitor, you'll probably have to pay a bit more, and it's my opinion that for $250, you'll find a nice big CRT monitor for less than that.  ;)

     Thank you so much for the information and difference of the two systems.  That was so interesting.  The LCD monitors look so up to date that it would have been so easy for me to goof-up and go for the outward appearance.

    You gave me a smile with the correction on the  "Specs" . The way I was spelling it does sorta fit my PC. I think I've got more than dead  pixels   - - -    ;D     I stand corrected and thank you for your help.That was very nice of you to explain this so clear for me.

Hey, no problem.  I'd wait to hear what some pro-LCD people have to say before making a decision though, I'm still not totally convinced I should get a CRT monitor when I get a new one, but mostly because of the size it takes up in my tiny, tiny room.

     Don't feel bad about a  "tiny" room.   It's how you arrange things that can make it real nice.    It's  YOUR space that you can venture into the unknown  if you wish.   The size of the physical  space isn't all that important.   My lil' cave is a corner of my living room .  The approx size is  8'x11'x13' ..  This MUST be as I watch over my lil' wife.   I also have all my PC books .and soon two complete PCs.

    Your info about the monitors is very helpful and as you suggest,   I'll wait and "see"  what else I can learn before  I buy one.

In LCD image quality, nobody beats Sony. I have a 17" SDM-HS74P XBRITE in which a local graphics designer swears is better than any CRT he ever used. It has a shiny screen which mimics the glass on a CRT. I can clearly see the screen from 50 feet away looking in a window from outside. The only problem with the 17 and 19 inch models is the native resolution is 1280x1024.

The SDM-HS74P is an older Sony high brightness model. The newer models in 17-19 inch are even better from what I understand. The 20-23 inch models are even better with resolutions of 1920x1200 and 1680x1050.

I never went to LCD for the reasons given earlier, but when i decided i would give it a go  :o.  It was unbelievable.  The image quality is leaps and bounds over CRT.  The resolution problems you can get, are not noticeable on my LCD.  I use an Acer 17" screen, its native resolution is 1280x1024, but it will happily run at 1024x768 with no image quality loss.  It has an 8ms response time.  Anything 16ms and below is good and you won't get any response time problems.  Slower response times can cause blurred images when whatever is on the screen is moving quickly.

I too recommend a Sony LCD, my dad uses one and his is amazing.  

CRTs strain your eyes more aswell, i can read text and work on my computer for extended amounts of time because of my LCD.  LCDs are also more power friendly, they don't use as much energy as a CRT by a lot.  I'm never going back to CRTs again.

Just get a decent make and read some reviews via google or post here and i'm sure we can find some.  That way you can get a LCD that has no dead pixels and will perform amazingly for you.

I highly recommend LCD and not just for the benifit of size but comfort!

I find that with my Viewsonic (which I feel is the absolute best) i can withstand longer pc sessions without eye fatique, no invisible flickering from refreshing etc.
The image quility is the best I have seen, and the screen has no glare even with a flashlight aimed directly at it.
Most do have a native reolution, but you can change resolutions in games/sims to what you think is best for yourself.

I currently use a Veiwsonic VX924 with a 4ms refresh rate which at the time was the fastest, this is the one spec you want to pay attention to, the lower the refresh rate number the better.  8-12ms refresh rate may be ok for flight sim but if you also game alot with FPS's you want the lowest number possible to reduce ghosting.

They now have a 2ms that Im eyeing for a second monitor, and Im thinking of going for 21" this time

I have a 20ms Dell 1905FP 19", very nice screen!

However, when I first got it, it absolutly HATED the blur, but now it's really grown on me, and I actually find it hard to look at CRTs.

Try to get the largest screen possible, I found I could only fit a CRT in my budget for the size I wanted, I tried an 8ms LCD and it was too blurry for my apps.

If you go to town Caveman, try to get a good look at some LCD's 19" and over. Remember they all look perfect with a static picture on the desktop, it's fast action that will show the faults.

Strange my 8ms LCD does not ghost, i play COD2 and am one of the quickest snipers in MP.  I have not noticed ghosting once.  Maybe it only happens to some makes of LCD.

Other than the few dead pixels I have no complaints with my LCD monitor. The only time you notice the lag in the screen refresh speed is when you make a point of scrolling as fast as you possibly can.

If you do go for LCD though don't get a cheap one or you'll have more dead pixels than live ones.

     Hey Nick N,   23 "   you can really get into the  area while flying.   Sounds great. You mentioned  "shiny screen" And no eye fatique. No Glare.    Didn't give it much  thought until now.  I did notice a  "mat" appearance on the ones I looked at yesterday in town.

     Politically Incorrect,   That is so helpful about the refresh rates.   So there is such a thing as  2ms refresh rate.  That's really FAST .   8 to  12 ms refresh rates sounds like it would mess-up fine detail by "ghosting".      I would like  "others" to comment on this speed as it may just be the make .

     Hey Congo,    The  "static picture" is so deceptive,  of course they  don't mention that in the  "write-up".  The fastest refresh rate is an absolute for loading scenery  without watching it happen as I do now.  The screen size is nice if it's also BIG.   I put the word  "also" as it would be the  second  consideration .

     Delta,   Very possible  - - -  the old saying :   You get what you pay for.   In this day ,  even that is not true  too often. However - - - my having such good friends helping  sure gives me the info needed to make good decisions.

     Woodhouse 2002,   Scrolling fast sounds like what would take place if "flying" very fast.   I do "fly " ultralights  low and slow but even this old man has his wild moments when I  "shoot"  myself from one airstrip to the one I'm about to explore.  [ A real hotrod  ]    Someday I may even try a JET.  ;D

     I do have some ,   not many I hope  ,  dead pixels,  oops,  we're still talking about the monitor,- - -   -  I think.

See, I told you there is a good reason for LCD's, I just didn't know it.  Everyone here may have just convinced me to get one too.
