Power Supply

Postby caveman16 » Fri Apr 14, 2006 8:57 am

Hey Guys,     Me Again ;D

It's been brought to my attention that perhaps a 600 watt power supply would serve me better.  Is it overkill ?   ???

At the same "PLACE "  [ www. Frozen CPU .com ]  They have this item :   Coolmax  600 watt modular ATX power supply  w/120mm Fan, PCI Express Ready [cu-600T ]. The cost is a little more but my budget could handle it OK. [$ 139.99 ]

Would appreciate your input on this.

       Very appreciative    - - - caveman

Can't have too much power... but it all depends on who's paying the utility bill. ;D

The idea with the more expensive PSUs tends to be that if they fail, they are much less likely to take other components in the system with them.

A 600W PSU will be very good, and Coolmax are a reasonable make. As rotty said though, it depends who is paying the electricity bill ;)

Hiper Type R. All I have to say is Hiper Type R. I know GeForce had trouble with his, however they are one of the top 5 most stable PSUs, and they have amazing warrenties. They are 580~640W fluctuating so you will alawaies have the right amount of power.

Yep, I was just unlucky. Cameron is right, they're fantastic PSUs. Can't comment on the warranty because mine was replaced by the place we bought it from, rather than Hiper themselves.

In all my life I've never seen an offer like this........

Ok Cameron, take us to............. the dark side!

You better put a disclaimer on it warning that images of ATI cards could be seen.

600 watts here.  I mostly got this since I didn't want to go back to the store if any lesser wattage proved insufficient.

I also don't pay the electricity bill. ;) For now. :-X

But yes, I would say 600 is a bit much.

Can't have too much power... but it all depends on who's paying the utility bill. ;D

A 600w psu dosen't draw 600w constantly they only draw what is needed to power the components + the energy disapated as heat.  For example if a 600w PSU was powering a pc that drew 400W at max load (a VERY high end gaming machine with sli) and that psu had an efficiancy at that load of 75% (avrage for a good quality psu) the psu would be drawing 500w from the wall (and having to disapate 100w as heat!).  The efficiancy of the psu is tipacly much less at low loads and very high loads for example the same psu at 75W (a typical office system) load may only be 45% efficiant.

For lower energy bills check the efficiancy of the power supply your going to buy with the amount of power your going to draw.  Higher effciancy means less energy is disapated as heat and lowe powered fans are required which means less noise. :)

you only need a 600w psu if your running quad SLI or massive amounts of hard drives or have a multi cpu system.  If you don't have any of these then save some money and get a lower rated psu.  For example my main system is very overclockable and perfectly stable on a 330w tagan psu and my shuttle system is also very stable on a 200w super micto 1u server psu.

the only two brands I can reomend are tagan and Pc power and cooling and (if you were buying a server) super micro.  never buy a cheap psu unless it's a very cheap system where long term stability matters little.  At a lan I was at recently a freind lost his mobo and cpu due to a faulty psu and also caused the main 80A RCB to trip many times.

Kip you may be able to get away with your 330W on your system, however have you looked at many of the newer cards? The new 7900GT alone requires a 450W or above PSU. Even a X800 requires a 400W to run at max load stable. Therefre buying a 600W PSU will not only give you room to expand in the future, but you are absolutely sure that your current system will have all the power it needs. Also have you tried to overclock a system like say mine on a 450W PSU. I couldnt get it passed 3.6Ghz stable with the 640W I have been able to push it past 4Ghz (now there were other limiting factors like my RAM that prevented me from staying there).

So in conclusion a hiper is your best bet.

Instead of arguing about psus we could all just use this tool to found out what rated psu we need:
http://files.pcapex.com/details.php?file=19
It's quite acurate  (if your using a good quality psu).

*one small slightly argumentative thing.  A 7800gt clearly dosen't take 450w all on it's own... a shuttle with only a 250w psu FOR THE WHOLE SYSTEM can run with one installed.
http://global.shuttle.com/Support/Suppo ... 0(FN21V1.x
(I know it says 7800gtx but the 7900gt uses less power)
