I am looking for opinions as to which vid card I should use based on what I have ATM.

PNY Nvidia G-Force FX 5200 with 128M
or
the on-board ATI Raideon Xpress 200 with 256M

Now, if the PNY would be the better of the 2 my next question is...by adding it to the PC, does the BIOS disable the on board video or do I have to do that manually?

thx

MC

type of expansion slots available on your motherboard? we could guide you on the correct path.

first note: NO BUY PCI!!!!! either AGP or PCIe (x16 (aka SLI))

The PNY is 8x AGP and I have a slot for that and a PCIe however I do not have one ATM. So AGP it will be.

If you have PCIe then you'd probably want to go for something in the gForce6 range instead of the 5200. What sort of funds have ye got avaliable?

Well had you read his poast he is asking based on what he has now, what card to use. In that case I suggest the FX card. Onboard tend to lack alot of options.

However on the topic of upgradeing, look at the 7300 series form nVidia.

Would'nt have thought thered be much between either, alas, both are relatively poor video chipsets by todays standards, however, a few users here get great results with the FX5200, I've seen them with my own disbelieving eyes!

Therefore, it has to be the 5200.

And then there are 5200's which are abyssmal trash and pny would fit into that category. Avoid the cheap brands or you will be disappointed

BTW, those cards are a waste of money.

BIOS usually has the switch for onboard or addon card. The monitor cable must be in the correct device for you to see a display, depending on which one is active...... so, switch to addon card in bios then shutdown....... Insert the new card and connect the monitor to it and reboot, the display will now be on the addon card.
