Windows Vista.

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6143883/p-4.html

DirectX 10 will increase game performance by as much as six to eight times.
High resolutions like 2048x2048.
You'll  have a 3D desktop and give each application its own 3D window, the display driver has to be flexible and stable enough to handle the video card's increased role in the system.

aaaaaaaaaaah CRAP!!! more cash :'(

We all are. Many other press releases say that more GPU RAM is going to be needed so 512MB or more is going to be the "Mid stream" for FSX and Vista. But we have had this conversation before. Now isn't a good time to upgrade. CPU and GPUs are going through a massive upgrade now, and late september we should be seeing some pretty fantastic jumps in the tech industry.

Hold on to your cash for now, and wate till the stuff is out. Then wate to see if Vista is even worth it. Then continue to wate for tech to come back to reasonable prices. After about a year of wateing then upgrade.

Cheers
Cameron

PS: Old News ;)

I'm definatly screwed  ;D most may need just a new graphics card if they have 64 bit...... but me........ lol new computer time! Cheers, Gunny

Well vista will run a 32Bit virsion, but its going to be like running XP on a 16 bit processer. Catch my drift ;)

Anyway when I said now isnt a good time to upgrade, I dont mean something like an outdated processer to the latest, or the old FX5500 to a 7800GS, I just mean dont overhaul your entire comp, as you will only have a year before another upgrade is in order.

So, this at the end of that article waspiflab:

"When we asked Tim when he thought we would see the first true DX10 games, ones that will take full advantage of DX10 hardware, he could only reply with a smile and a cryptic, "When will Windows Vista ship?" "

Does that mean vista is going to have a dx10 Pinball game?

Also, the article posts the question of whether or not upcoming games like FSX will have full dx10 support.... my feeling is that this is very doubtful. FS marketing is always aimed at a mass market, it is one of their best sellers of all time, they certainly aren't looking at a niche market release.

Consider the time it takes to develop and market the average best selling games. What, something in excess of 3 years?

I don't think there is cause for concern just now, and I think we will have about 2 years to make the transition unless I'm completely underestimating development.

There are plenty of sims - games well on the way to release date that will enjoy a full cycle of  success before any major transition occurs. Or I'll eat my hat here at simV, propeller blade and all.    8)

It is my understanding that FSX is DX10 compatable. It will run on FX9 but without all of the eye candy.

Basically it'll look like running FS9 on intagraded graphics.

Full DX10 compatibility doesn't make sense with FSX. How can it be when DX10 or whatever it will be called

Full DX10 compatibility doesn't make sense with FSX. How can it be when DX10 or whatever it will be called  isn't even finished yet? Programmers can't write to routines that aren't finalised, can they? The game won't be miserable on DX9, you just won't see whatever DX10 features were written into the sim, you'll still enjoy the same level of DX9 graphics support we have now only it should be even better with the new game.

What about the official screenshots of FSX? Don't tell me they are using DX10 compatible cards on their PC's!

Congo,
Even though directx 10 consoles havn't shipped to third party vendors yet dosn't mean that microsoft dosn't know enough to program it into their 1st party software.

What's a DX10 console? I think you are confused. A console is a game machine like a Playstation or Xbox. I understand that DX10 consoles are being readied but what has this got to do with FSX or anything relevant here?

Or do you mean they are testing the game on DX10 pre-release hardware? I had thought of that actually, but have no knowledge of it and don't pretend to surmise how smart Microsoft are or are not.

I am still confused though, FSX has been in developement for a long time, were the FSX programmers writing to DX10 routines from the start, even though those routines do no yet exist in their release versions? Is FSX going to be a "hybrid" sim that is compatible with the old DX and the new one built under microsoft?

What the heck is going on? You have some saying nothing will be compatible with DX9 or if it is, it will look like crap, yet Microsoft are going to release this title as a best seller?

I'm sorry, I'd like some answers from you doom merchants.

Why is this thread in hardware anyway?  You're scaring me!  :o   ;)

It is my understanding that some of the eye candy will not be available with DX9 but the game will run fine.

I would think that's correct, it's always been the case in the past when DX has changed.

At worst it will give us a similar situation as to when some cards didn't support aircraft reflections or water effects. But the DX10 features may be a bit more subtle, such as fog and flame effects. But hey, I'm just throwing this out there so don't take it as gospel.

I just hope they have flocks of birds to run into so I can simulate bird strikes.   :P

And I am sure it would be to much to ask to be able to flash our cards to DX10 or does that require a hardware change on the cards.
