So, I've done my research, and I've found that now is NOT a good time to upgrade, considering all the new tech coming out during vista.

Depends on the layout , size of the board, and, the corresponding case.
Imo, I'd stick with what you currently have, but, after the new PSU, upgrade to 1GB RAM. - You'll see quite an improvement.

Nowhere does it say you HAVE to have the PSU inside the case.
I have an aged p3 machine that now houses a p4 chip & board, the PSU is mounted externally, and works fine. (it sits on top of the case!) ;)

4 series shut up

You'll be able to mount your current hardware in the new case. The compaq boards are known as "mini ATX" which means that you'll be able to mount the board in the comp, there will be some eatra space in the bottom of the case, but nothing big. I suggest a Hiper Type R, Ultra X-Connect or Thermaltake for your PSU.

I'm with 4 Series on this, but I say rip the whole thing out and hang it from hooks on the wall. Use duct tape to secure it if the wind blows hard.

Sure, but if I put the PSU outside the case, it might be a little loud and hot, and i'm not a big fan of that ;D

You just get a silent PSU (Hiper Type R or other similar), and PSUs dont generate too much heat. However you'll probibly have to have your side pannel off so that the wires will reach. If I were you I'de look at one of the ThermalTake Sporanos that come with a PSU. Excellent case, with an amazing PSU and both are wisper quiet.
