I have need to transfer some texts from my E700 Samsung phone to my PC so I can print them out, I've obtained a USB data cable for the phone, but, I don't appear to have any software to allow me to read the phone.

I'm a complete newbie to this aspect of mobiles, could somebody give me some pointers?

I've found a data transfer program from Samsungs website, but, it appears to support serial connections not USB.

I've tried Googling for a suitable porgram, but, no joy so far. Samsungs website seems to have no USB data transfer software, do I have to buy another USB to phone lead, this time with software??

You should be able to get the drivers from somewhere. I have a Motorola (V300 super hacked) so I know not about Samgsung stuff, however I know it exists. Try googleing "Samgsung Phone Hacking" That should give you better results.
