Yes!!! new system came. OH No!! Joystick don't fit

Hi all,
My new system came and i was looking forward to getting going with fs2004, as my old system was too slow to play it.
Big problem almost straight away.
I have a saitek x7-38 joystick with throttle, and rudder pedals that connect through it to my computer......erm, oh, well they did with my old one. :-(

The connector on my joystick/rudder pedals is a 15pin male socket, and all that my new system has is USBs....
And a 9pin male socket that i don't know whats for.

I've been to pc world, hoping to just get an adapter from 15pin to USB, ( i don't know much about computers, so i thought it would be as simple as that.), NO WAY. "Those 15 pin sockets are obsolete thesedays" was the advice i got.

So now i'm stuck... Brand new system and can't play the game i got the thing for. I'd probably just buy a joystick, but my favourite thing in fs is helicopters, and i'd miss the rudder pedals.. And now i can't afford to buy new pedals, and a joystick.

Are the rudder twist joysticks any good??

Any advice on this problem will be very much appreciated..

Thanx in advance.

Et.

True, they are obsolete. But you can get adaptors. I have one here. There is one HERE for example.

Jon,
Thanx for that, i've just had a look at those adapters at amazon.co.uk. The reviewers say that they will not work on digital joysticks. So now i'm trying to find out if my Saitek x7-38 is analogue or digital. And not having much luck to be honest.

Can you open the case and check to see if your M/B has a gameport riser plug on it. If it has you are in business ! All you have to do is buy a gameport plug rear mount for the pc and plug the cable from it to the pins on the m/b.

cheers

Chuck, Most motherboards (made 2000 and after) no longer have any support for Gameport at all. You have to go all usb now.

Well I dont know about the twist, however the rudder bar on the Saitek X-45 /52 works very well. Personally I would get an X-45 (they run about $40) right now so that you have a USB 2.0 Joystick, then later get some CH pedels.

X-52 has twist, not rudder bar. just to clear that up.

And a 9pin male socket that i don't know whats for.

thats a serial connection. mostly used for networking purposes. this predates thicknet, thinnet, co-ax, and RJ-45.

yep I'd follow the advice of Sir Henderson on this topic and just get a cheap soundcard...you wouldn't need to use it to play audio through, but you could use it to run gameport stuff through :)

Just tell me the exact mainboard model and I'll tell you if it has a gameport riser on it.

It is a gameport you are after, that's the 15 pin thing you refer to. You won't need a soundcard if the mainboard already has a riser you can attach a cable/connector to.

CTJ

most ASUS boards have gameport risers on them. The last three ASUS m/b I've bought in the last two years  all had gameport risers on them. The latest M/B I've bought, the ASUS A8N SLI 32 has a gameport riser on it.

You just have to get the right model board.

The Soundcard option is the other way to do it.

Big thanx to you all for your input.
Followed Jons advice and looked for one of those adapters on internet. Luckily i found a store about 5 miles away that had them in stock. Went to day and got one and it works!!!!!!!  ;D
