What would be the best way to set up 2 computers so they network with each other?
would it be best to use a crossover lead or some sort of hub and do you need to 'tell' these computers about each other?

You may have onboard networking cards or an ethernet card already installed on the machines. There will be a BIOS switch to enable/disable any onboard ethernet devices if they are present.

Use the onboard ones, no need to go out and buy addon ethernet cards. I'm also assuming you have not got a multiport router with an inbuilt switch, if you did, you would network through that.

If you know it'll only be two computers and are OK with having to have the "main" one on and online for the other to get online, a crossover cable setup is fine. Even if you have onboard LAN, you'll need at least one card for the "main" computer, as the onboard will most likely be where your modem plugs in.
I've been sharing a DSL connection and a printer this way for years. No routers or hubs.
XP will walk you through the setup. Compared to previous Windows.. it's incredibly easy..

I've not any experience using USB for anything other than periphs.. yet.
If you can use USB for that stuff.. why the heck aren't we all networking with USB connections.. why bother with e-net cards and cat-5 at all ?

forget that. easiest & cheapest way to network two computers is a null modem calbe. it's a serial cable designed to hook up two computers.mabye the technology has aged since ethernet, but it still could work.

Congratulations!
The networking gods hate me, so I wish I could replicate your results.
