Problems with GFX card

You may remember that few weeks ago I was asking for advice on choosing a graphics.

I'm pretty sure my onboard gfx are disabled, because everything looks crap and the icons are too big and low res.

Not quite sure what you mean here. Sounds like your still displaying the desktop on your onboard graphis w/ your old monitor? You may simply have to select your new adaptor/display as the primary display (Control panel>Display).

Search your Windows Help for 'multiple monitors'.

If you want to completely disable your old display: Not all onboard graphics will disable from the bios. You may have to goto Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Display Adaptors and disable it from there. (If disabled, the listing for the adaptor will have a red X.)

umm i know how to fix this if its what I think it is. Hold down F8 right before windows boots, then tell it to enable VGA mode.

Sounds like a incorrect install of drivers to me. MS should be able to recognise that their is a VGA installed and render the OS like it would (without 3D acceleration). So uninstall all drivers and reinstall em.

Also Candle its not F8 its usually F2 or Del to get into the BIOS.

you dont want bios, its in the XP boot options screen CJ. Hold down F8 and you get XP boot options on any machine, then move down to enable VGA mode, this as the affect of using standard VGA driver instead of your video card drivers. Windows will then repair the driver and you should then be able to restart and windows will load the drivers correctly.

Ah that makes a bit more sense, however shouldn't XP switch to the new GPU when the nVidia drivers were installed? Hmm.

Try plugging the monitor into your graphics card instead of the onboard video out............?

OK, it seems there is a bit of uncertainty here, firstly, I have enabled VGA.

the gfx card instructions inply that one powers the computer up with the 6200 installed, and then installs the cd with the drivers llater

First mistake, Buying a 6200............. They arent very good cards Especially if you bought it from a store, (Wasted money) the cards are truely a downclocked and locked up 6600 if you had the version before the NV44 you'd be able to have a free 6600 but that is probably not the case, nvidia fixed that up, and secondly, is it a PNY? if it is I wouldnt be surprised if its defect, took my card 3 months to get its act togethor.... But I dont blame you for buying it, I did the same damn thing

Also to install the drivers, you must take the card out, MAKE SURE windows loads up etc then uninstall all video drivers shut it off, put the card back in, load her up and pray windows has VGA drivers temporarily and then Load up the drivers from the CD, I would NOT advice you to install the drivers from the site unless you have a major issue with them, I believe the 6200 ships with 76 something so they are a bit older, This card Brings much cussing with it! OK, just to clarify, I have always had onboard graphics before, so will I actually have any drivers I need to uninstall?   I know not to download drivers from Nvidia, so do i install the drivers from the CD, then plug the card in?   Will it hurt just to try it anyway?

Make it easy on yourself and totally disregard all of the above.

You did not give any feedback on my suggestion above, so I have no idea whether you actually have the monitor plugged into the onboard/motherboard video

I only suggested what I did, I also had a crappy lower watt power supply too, so I had to take it out anyways Cheers, Gunny

That's fine Gunny, but he needs to get the hardware up and running first, this is a common problem when people switch from onboard to an addon card.

(This is where I get the feeling I may be having humble pie for dessert, something doesn't seem right here with his partial and temporary display.)
