New monitor!!!

Postby llavalle » Tue Mar 07, 2006 7:26 pm

hey guys!!..

Just got a new job(not a pilot job yet.. unfortunatly).. but it pays well so I'm bought myselft a small gift...

Image

Yeah.. to complete my LCD setup, I bought a brand new Samsung 204b.. a 20" 1600x1200 LCD panel... (I already had the 2 17")...it's REALLY nice and I'm looking forward to use FS with my 3monitor setup...

RIght now, the left monitor is connected to my 2nd computer...

I have 2 choices...

1-Buy a decent PCI graphic card to drive my 3rd screen..  OR
2-Buy a new motherboard with dual pci-express and buy 2 PCIe card... (will be SLI... but to drive 3 screen, SLI must be disabled)

Anyone has experience running FS2004 on 2 separate video cards??? My current card is an GF6600GT AGP... and on the market.. most of the PCI cards are from ATI.. like RADEON 9250 and such...

I've had 2 cards in the past, but I never tried to run a 3d app on both...

Well for the absolute best you should look to run say 2 6800Ultras in SLi (cheap but gets what you want done). As for the PCI Gpu I don't know much about that, however I have heard that they will degrade the preformance of the main GPU a tad.

or you could get the application that allows FS to be run on 2 computers and use the secondary comp with that monitor...... Check down in the Home Cockpit section for more info, I hear it works a charm! just a bit of networking is all! Cheers, Gunny

My work computer (ex gamer) has 2 6600GTs with 4 monitors and ran FS9 great. There is nothing like having all your guages, nav aids, radio stack, fsnavigator, and anything else you would care to have open, open at the same time.

I have 2 Samsung 19 in screens and 2 17 in Benq monitors hooked to it now. The Benqs are DVI and the Samsungs are analog but they look and work great with FS-9.

I would recommend the 6800GTs if you go PCI-E. I can't max the settings in FS-9 with the 6600s.

If thats a really good job you got, spring for a pair of 7800s. I run a 7800GTX OC in my other computer and have no problem maxing out the settings in FS9. I am not sure about the 6800GT but the 7800GTX has 2 DVI ports on it.

all 6800GT's and Ultra have dual DVI headers unless specified otherwise.

No, they are actually a bit old... The model is L1720B and it's listed at 16ms...

as for the clean desk.. that because I did not picture the left side...

For the matrox product, I contacted them yesterday about this product and I got a reply this afternoon..

Thank you for contacting Matrox.

How our GXM (Graphics eXpansion Module)products work is they simulate a single wide screen monitor.  they do so by generating an EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) which is used by the graphic card to know what resolutions the "monitor" is capable of.

Therefore when you use the DH2G and TH2G products, Windows only sees a single wide screen monitor.  So all three monitors connected must use the same resolution and the desktop is physically stretched over all screens.

Then, when asking about the taskbar that would stretch on the 3 windows.. he replied :

The task bar will get stretched.
But we have a Windows Management application that you install that allows you to configure how you want applications maximized, where you want pop up screens to open etc.

probably similar to Nvidia Nview when using the 2 outputs as 1 big monitor(Horizontal Span) instead of using a fake 2nd videocard (DualView).  I tried it.. but it's really weird and not all application like it... sometimes, windows pop in the middle of the 2 screens, etc...

I think I'll simply buy a PCI gfx card to run the 3d one...

thx all for the replies!

i dont know what ctjoyce isn't pouncing on you right now, you keep mentioning PCI graphics... as far as i'm concerned, he practically hates PCI (no offense CJ) ;)

i like the setup. i'd hope to switch to LCD monitors so my 2 CRT's can go bye bye.

Oh Alex, you know me only too well. The reason I'm not pouncing though is because hes useing them for 2D apps. So while he is haveing a minor preformance loss, he isn't doing what alot of people try and do, and stretch a VC over 3 monitors.

For desktop management I use Ultramon. It is much better than Nview and programmable.
