Postby masmith » Sat Feb 04, 2006 2:42 pm

I have just put a 32 mb card in to my desktop computer to run a secondery monitor
But FS is slow and when I opon "windows task manger" when nothing is running my CPU usage is up at 58%
Then when I start FS2004 it shots upto 100% and works so slow itwould take decades for a flight to load!

Why is this??

Any Help please?

I'm no expert, but trying to force FS9 through an ancient, 32MB (obviously PCI ( I can't imagine there'd be two AGP slots in there)) video-card seems like something that would be a tremendous bottle-neck.

Would it even be DirectX current ?

It means.. it's meant to work with the most recent release of DirectX.. I believe it's 9.0c now ?

All I know about it is (other than DirectX is a fancy name for a Windows patch to make it game-worthy) that if your video-card isn't DirectX ready.. you shouldn't (can't) expect it to run newer games.

Nevermind about directX, an old 32mb card isn't gonna cut the mustard with FS9.

I wouldn't be surprised if the newly installed card is causing other conflicts.

DirectX is a set of routines/drivers that developers use to make their programs run with speed, good sound and smooth graphics. It used to be a freeware addon, but it became such an important addon that Microsoft bought it to use as part of windows.

DirectX current is a trendy way to say "I have a graphics card that is compatible and supportive of the latest version and features of DirectX."

All versions of DirectX are backwards compatible, so any old card that was designed to use directX routines should still work, it just won't display the latest graphics features and eye candy is all.

I dont even think theres a way to run 2 video cards at once....Is there ??? Or at least Ive never heard of doing this.  Is the 64mb a PCI as well as the 32mb?  Your FS9 will run off of whatever card is assigned to it.  So if your 32mb is now the primary then probably should take it out and just use the 64 ;)

And if someone corrects me then I might be happy.  I've still got a 64mb card laying around that could come back to use if its possible to use dual PCIs running together :P

I'm just guessing when you installed the 32 it set the system to use it insted of the 64.  Therefore your performance is cut in half.

A 64mb card doesn't give you twice the performance of a 32mb card.

The amount of memory onboard a graphics card has almost NOTHING to do with it's performance. Cards are fitted with enough RAM to do the job it was designed for, cramming heaps of ram on a video card won't help it become a better card.

The old 32mb card you have is most likely a POS that is ten times worse than the 64mb one you have.

For your system a AGP 4x / 8x card
8 (preferably 12) or more pixel pipelines.
A deadacated 3D Gameing core  nVidia:  6600, 6800, 7800.  ATi: 9600, 9800, X800, X1800, X1900

Rember that just because you have more RAM on your card dosnt mean its good. Just about everything is 256MB right now, but alot of it is junk. Look at the features, look at core and memory clock, do resurch. Don't buy blindly.

Something LIKE this........

http://au.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=2& ... odelmenu=1

It depends on if you want it for gaming/simming, this one is what I'm recommending as a bare minimum. This particular card has a multi-output interface.

...note also, that Congo's recommended 6600GT card above also has two video output sockets to run your main and  second monitor...:D...!
...which I think is what you are after... ;)...!

Paul... 8)...!

P.S. I use my second monitor to continually display my GPS maps, Radio stack, flight controls, etc, which leaves my main monitor clear for displaying just my aircraft panel and scenery.... ;)...!

...Fantastic...;D...!
