Thank You!  New Toys Installed

Thanks to the forum members who recently helped me select a video card and power supply.  Based on their input I purchased an EVGA GF6800GS and new PS for my PC to replace my GF FX5200.  I plugged everything yesterday and got it working this morning.

The Power Supply, a 430W ThermalTake is of much higher aparent quality than my old unit and the video card... well...

Previously I could run FS9 mostly high settings at 800x600 16bit, with clouds turned WAY down.  This morning it ran smooth as silk with everything, including clouds, max'd out.  Only Anti-Aliasing slowed down the frame rate perceptably, and all of this at 1600x1200 32bit.  A monumental improvement.

I only had 15 minutes to play with everything before work.  I'm still using the drivers supplied from EVGA and need to update.  I tried the nVidia drivers downloaded from the web (Forceware) but they didn't recognize my card as a supported product.  I don't have a clue why...

Dont use the AA in FS, Let your card do the work. The effect will look much better if you let nVidia render your AA and AF insted of microsoft, but other than that good to hear and welcome to the "higher end" systems on the V

Thanks.

So that's what the "AA" setting does?  Changes from hardware AA (vid card) to software AA?  I was wondering why I couldn't see a difference.  I've got it "off" now and it runs great.  I did manage to get the frame rates to slow a shade by maxing out dynamic scenery, putting on some bad weather, and flying over NYC.  It didn't crawl but it did get a bit slow.  Still flyable though.  If that's the worst it can get then I'm happy!

And the improvement in my driving games is phenomenal.  Between my new RAM and this video card I've already dropped six seconds at Spa!  That's a ton of improvement.  It's amazing what strong, stable frame rate will do for you.

Go through your card settings. The specs will be turned down low on it. Turn them up for better performance. 8)

Because they aren't signed drivers.

1600x1200x32 is too high for that card.

So, you want to upgrade your drivers why?

Sorry, I'm not up on my windows lingo.  What's the difference between a signed and unsigned driver?

Why do you say 16x12 is too high for the card?  The settings seem to work perfectly.  Granted I have know way of knowing whether or not I'm actually getting 16x12 out of it but there is a visible difference between that setting and the next step down.  Is there a problem using 16x12x32 so long as the frame rates are solid or could I hurt something?

That's one of the first things I did.  Any time you get a new toy ya gotta play with all the buttons.  ;)
