Want the new (adpative) AA but can't turn it on? (Called transparency AA or whatever for Nvidia)

This is for ATI cards only:

All dx9 ATI cards support AD-AA.  If the option is greyed out do this:

Start>Run>"regedit"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Control>Video

There will be a number of folders in there.  Open the first folder and click the 0000 folder.

Look down the list on the right for Catalyst version.  Check it is your version.  If not keep going down the folders on the left looking at each 0000 folder until you find it.

There may be two folders containing 0000 folders for your version, so check, because you will need to add the next bits to both of them.

Look for ASTT_NA on the right list.  Change this from 1 to 0.

Right click on the white space on the right; New>String Value.  Call it ASTT, set it to 1.

Restart the comp, go to Catalyst Control Centre and it will be available and you can set it to quality or performance.

Enjoy new clarity and better AA! ;)

ARGH!

I tried under the right catalyst version, but for some reason there is already a Binary called ASTT and I cant make a new string value!

Don't worry about the binary ASTT value. Changing that made no difference. In fact, it reset itself to it's original value after I changed it.

I did get Ad-AA enabled though, by changing the ASTT_NA value to 0 in that same reg path. No other change was necessary. This reg path (that had the binary value ASTT) is the one listed in the CCC information center:
2D Driver File Path      System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{0E7C8F7E-610A-4DE4-98B7-937DEA722522}\0000

There is another reg path, under the 0000 heading, where you can add the ASTT string value, as it was not present there. I went ahead and added the ASTT string and changed the value of the ASTT_NA in this one as well, though I had already enabled Ad_AA from the single change above.

Not tested in a game to see if it works correctly, but the box is no longer greyed out in the CCC.

This is with an X850XT.

HL2, BF2 and Farcry have full support for AD-AA, those are the best ones to test it on.  I will have a look at FS9 later to see if better clarity in trees can be noticed.

Most ATI cards will support A-AA, including older ones such as the 9800pro, but some, even the newer releases, do not. The x800xt AIW does not fully (on card) support A-AA and the setting can cause strange full screen color flashing and graphic anomalies, similar to what you would see if the GPU were overheating, when enabled...

Because of that I am using the DX Override method of accomplishing what A-AA does.

Also, as of driver release 6.1 and 6.2 the registry setting has changed somewhat. It is best to simply do a COMPLETE search in the registry for: ASTT_NA and if you do not know exactly what you are looking for, change ALL the ASTT_NA entries from one (1) to zero (0) and reboot. If you do not get them all it can leave the setting visible in the CCC but grayed out and not available. Changing all of them will not hurt anything and assures the setting will enable in CCC.

The ASTT value does not need to be added or edtied as that will automatically change when the ASTT_NA value is set to zero and the system rebooted.
