Newbie! :D Joystick controls in FS...

Hi all

First post... :)

Got a question or two here.

I bought the Logitech Extreme 3D pro for FS9. As far as i remember the joystick in its normal position should keep the aircraft also in level flight....the nose is level on the artificial horizon. But with this joystick....as soon as i take off from the runway....and then after a while leave teh stick so that it goes in the center, the aircraft still continues to climb at the same angle.

When i puch forward on the stick the plane goes down but then on leaving the stick on center the nose still stays a few degrees above the horizon....this effect varies and so i never see the plane at the same angle twice. Since the joystick is new it shouldnt be doing this!

Has anyone else got the same joystick? is is working fine?

NOTE: while on ground, hte joystick sppears to move the cockpit steering wheel stick things (in virtal cockpit view) pretty normally - like the sticks are not pulled back when the joystick is centered.

Also i would like to know something about the autopilot. When set to ON and the destination is also selected (before flight) and i set teh navigation to GPS...can the AP land my plane on the airport...if not when do i have to take the control over? Once i left teh auto pilot to land and it almost crashed me by landing on the wronf side of the ariport with no landing gear or flaps....! what do i need to select to ;eave m plane on AP - also if i select a certain altitude for the plane - and select hold altitude..will AP reduce my altitude when nearing the destination airport?

Last lil question: The Moon! how to make it appear more larger...where is the texture file...though i dont think the texture size will resize the moon....there should be a config file with some settings....or maybe the whole thing is hardcoded into the games engine.

phew

Hope u guys can help  ;D

Centering the joystick won't keep your plane in level flight.  You need to properly trim your controls in order for the plane to fly neutral.  Depending on circumstance returning the joystick to center can have any number of effects on what the plane does.

There's a lot to know about getting the AP to properly fly the plane, especially to landing (MSFS's AP won't land the plane).  And it certainly won't properly align while set on GPS.

I recommend you work your way through the lessons.  They're quite good.  I've been flying MSFS since its inception and the FS9 lessons taught me a thing or two about the right way to fly.  It's definately time well spent.

A note to moderators...

This topic was moved here from the FS9 forum.  I think it would be more appropriate in its home forum as it really has nothing to do with hardware.

Welcome to SImviation.

First off, some folks have the Logitech - I prefer Saitek. ;)

If you are new to FS - could it be to do with the trim of the aircraft rather than the joystick? ???

No, GPS will lead you to the airport, but will not land the plane.
You need to disengage the autopilot to land manually.

One of our experts here wrote a lovely tutorial on ILS landings:

As for the moon. Check out SImviaiton or Avsim for better downloads. FSSkyworld is a must. Get it from Avsim. ;)

Hope this helps,

Ben :)

EDIT: Yes, I agree Chris. ;)

EDIT: Why can't I get this link to work?

Don't forget to use the "Elevator Trim" wheel in the cockpit to set level flight...!
You have to do this with all aircraft, after you have reached your cruise height, and also re-adjust it after every change of power, and also trimming the aircraft before landing...  ;)...!

You will spend as much time with your hand on the Trim Wheel as you do cuddling the joystick/yoke, constantly re-trimming... ;D...!

...and don't forget, if you are running on Autopilot, you will need to re-trim the aircraft after switching off your auto-pilot...!

Get used to the Trim Wheel... ;)...!

Paul... 8)...!

P.S. Note: Have a look at the "Trim Wheel" before take-off. The indicator should be just below the centre line often marked with the letters "TO" (Take-Off).
Then re-trim the aircraft after reaching the cruise height.
You should be able to fly the aircraft "Hands Off" once correctly trimmed...!

;D Thanks everyone for the great response

I sure will go and fiddle with trim ...never realised it could do the trick!

Thanks

Excellent... ;D...!

The default keys for trim are:
Num Lock OFF! on the keypad...
...tap the keys and watch the wheel...>>>
"7" to pitch nose down.
"1" to pitch nose up.

Practise in the Default Cessna 172...easy-peasy there... ;)...!

Yet another question pops out! :-[

While going down the runway at full throttle...why does my plane start to go off center ....veer to one side....do i have a faulty Brand New joystick? or is it something completely normal and realistic? :(

Quite normal in every prop driven aircraft due to the torque rotation of the engine.
With props rotating clockwise from the pilots seat the aircraft will veer to the left....
..apply right rudder to correct this....
..easy-peasy once you get used to it... ;D...!

ok this isnt just related to propeller aircrafts...jet engines and what not you name it! i have tried it with the B747 and a downloaded airbus a380 alike - but im begining to think that the stick that is supposed to bring joy is inevitably at fault and defected. i have read some product reviews on the web just now and some players do have the same problem.... :-[

go and set your controller in fs MENU, usually you need to make it less sensible around neutral position, otherwise it will input control for every rabbit fart you apply on the stick... ;)
seriously the weight of your hand can be enough to give an unwanted input, also when moving the stick, say forth or back, you may unwillingly induce aileron or rudder input.
I have the same joystick and I'm very happy, you just need to set it.

welcome

Could you describe the problem?  Everything you've described so far seems like normal behavior, like everything is working the way it's supposed to.  If you really want to see if things are working switch to Virtual Cockpit next time you have problems.  Observe your rudder pedals and yoke.  If they're twitching and moving eratically while you control is centered then you do indeed have a problem.  If they're steady and stable then things are working normally.

I had a problem with my Logitech stick.  Every now and then the rudder wouldn't respond or would respond in a very jerky, hap-hazard fasion.  Viewing the rudder pedals in the VC showed me the problem was hardware, not my flying style.  Turns out I was running older drivers on my joystick.  Updating the drivers fixed my problems.

But my problems aren't the same as you describe.  In my case, with a prop plane, when taking off the plane would slowly move left on the runway.  I'd respond with a little right rudder and the plane wouldn't react.  It would get worse and worse and I'd give more and more rudder then all of a sudden: WAM, the rudder would go hard right and stick.  I'd go left rudder to compensate but the plane again wouldn't respond.  I balled up more Cessnas that way and pretty much couldn't get the Piper Cub off the ground (all the time thinking I just didn't know how to fly the darned thing).

I notice that you are using awful, commercial, aluminium, cigar tube aircraft to practice on....'747...A380...etc... :'(...!

Have you spent the customary time necessary to perfect your aircraft knowledge, and obtain your Pilots licence, flying the trainer aircraft, eg; Cessna 152/172...?

That's the place to start for real, and in the flight simulator....trust me...;)...!

Paul...6 years spent in the Cessna 150/152.... ;)...!

Good man...!

Well i do have my basic flying skills section complete but not everything else like private pilot and all.

Heck i can take a plane up into the air and even land it back using the throttle, flaps, power and some crazy joystick movements...though i have yet to learn all the little things that go on between taking off and landing.

ALSO guys, i have noticed that when i use the controllers own config software that has the FS9 profile built into it and all the nice button assignments - the planes donot veer while taking off!...

Hopefully the problem wont return

What drivers are you running on the Logitech?  My driver version is 4.60.349.0.  I don't have any problem with these drivers but had one with lower rev drivers.
