Main FS Hardrive A.F.U.

I was having stability issues with certain things since I upgraded XP to the full network pro edition service pack 2.  Among them were stability issues with certain apps including some aircraft that caused ctd.  I finally got tired of it the other night and I un-installed the Service Pack 2.  Well, that doesn't work real well.  Now windows on that drive is even worse off. Remote Call Procedure keeps terminating and causing re-start, can't connect to any sites at all after connecting to the net, my vid card drivers were lost and so were certain of my chipset drivers.  I was fortunate enough to be able to copy to this hardrive things that would be hard to replace but I am seeing a total reformat and re-installation of windows on that drive this weekend.  Even the repair console on my XP system disk couldn't fix everything.  Take my advice.  Unless you need them, don't install any of these service packs and if you have them, keep them on unless you plan to re-format/re-install.

Ever since I installed XPpro + SP2, I've had a stable system(s). Absolutely the best thing to ever happen to PC's.

What on Earth have you done Gary?

A little hint.

Don't upgrade off the MS website. Install your OP SYS and then add SP2 by this link and click on the DOWNLOAD button, save that file to a CD or secure hard disk and run it as soon as you have WinXP up and running.

After that, you only need the critical security updates and they can also be found as standalone files that you can download and save for later installation. I believe the automated updates can wreak havoc on machines intended for performance.

My service pack 2 was installed in a similar fashion.  Not via auto-update.  The PC shop I deal with downloaded it for me and burned it to a disk I supplied.  I have dial-up, they have cable and the network pro full service pack 2 is well over 200 megs.  I un-installed it primarily due to 3 aircraft which caused crash to desktop ever since I installed it.  The GC 707 panel, the 188 electra with the Paul Strogan panel and the RFP 742.  None of those ever caused system crash til after I upgraded to service pack 2.  I track how things perform and interact and I also log flights.  The hard drive I'm running on at this moment is off the disk XP.  I did some testing last night with the 742 and the 707 and no problems at all. I also know my FS environment is the same to because I keep it the same between both of my hard drives by installing add-ons to both and copying over of folders.  It's extra bother but it makes recovery easier than doing it from scratch from the zips.  I am going to re=format my drive F either today or tomorrow.  It is only marginally usable due to Remote Procedure Call terminating and causing re-start continually.  I already have all files I don't want to loose backed up on this hard drive.
