AMD Socket A processors....Availability...?

Hello Lads...
I have been an enthusiastic user of AMD "socket A" central processors over the years.
Having very recently replaced my slightly elderly Gigabyte socket A motherboard with a new Gigabyte socket A, 400 FSB version, I now find that few, if any, socket A processors are advertised for sale now....!!!
I was hoping to swop my AMD 2600+ XP Athlon for an AMD 3200+ (the max size)....
...but they all seem to have disappeared off the planet...!!!

Is the pin arrangement of socket A processors peculiar to socket A "sockets"....?

...and is there much to be gained from upgrading from 2600 to 3200...?

Cheers Lads...!

Paul...;D...!

Yes. 462 pins, no more, no less. :)

You can still get some Socket A Semprons. Those have replaced all the older Thoroughbreds and Barton models. The 3200+ Barton is very hard to find these days. I think they stopped production some time ago.

...don't you just wish that when you had popped into your local computer shop, wandered over to the lovely coloured box on the shelf containing a hi-tech-looking socket A motherboard....
....that a Guardian Angel had tapped you on the shoulder, wagged his finger, shook his head, and said....
"Don't do it".....
...and pointed you in the direction of the lovely coloured box on a different shelf, which you should have got...!

...don't it always happen... :'(...!

Paul The Obsolete... :o...!
....you've got to keep laughing...?

Socket A has been out of date for a while, thats what I have (AMD Athlon Socket A XP 3200+ 32 bit) I was looking into replacing them but got graphics sound PSU and HDD.... This comp was bought back in July of 2004 and they had As then but prolly were out of style.... Cheers, Gunny (Computers can be one heck of a pain sometimes)

It's a right arse...!

I've been having problems with my Gigabyte GA7 600L Socket A  MoBo for years, (boot-up probs), so the other week I replaced it with a brand new Gigabyte GA7 400N SL Socket A 400 FSB MoBo for my existing AMD Athlon XP 2600+...!
All works a treat now....
but...
It's now impossible to get Socket A, (Super Socket 7), AMD Athlon Processors (462 pins) to upgrade...!!!
...Buggar...!

With reference to Scania's link....the

Socket 939 is the newest AMD version to date. Though it is due shortly to be replaced by the Socket AM2 (940-pin), which will bring DDR2 support for the first time to AMD. I believe that's scheduled for Q2 of '06. Along with the new socket this year comes new CPUs of the X2 flavor (dual-core) up to 5000+ rating, and 940-pin versions of current chips.  8)

Don't forget the new FX-60 famly and quad SLi. Yes boys it looks like a good year for AMD. Hopefully intel can catch up with Conroe and 975X chipsets. However ATi is going to end up loseing the dual card market with the lack of preformance from X-Fire. Ahh yes I cannot wate till april when I change over to AMD. A vennice 4000+, NF4 SLi and 2 7800GT's or GTX's depending on the price.
