I bought an IDE Cable for a master and slave drive (I have a 160, and a 15 with a 120 on its way eventually) and my Stock one is only for 1 drive, so I bought a new for 5.25 in a local shop installed Both HDDs (160 and 15) and all I got was floppy, I use original it works, This is a total seperate cable then my CD-rom/DVD Drives.... any ideas whats up? I had my dad take it back and now another one and still doesnt work..... I had em tight as they'd go, Cheers, Gunny (I have stock one that came with HP Installed now and its works great)

well, the IDe is a 40 pin cable (with these newer models have 80 wires in the ame 40 pins... idk.
the floppy is a 34 pin cable, and can be noted by the twist. i learned this when i bought a couple pieces for my new computer, i ended up buying a floppy cable instead of an IDE.

The only thing I can think of, is the jumper pins. Some boards/bios seem more particular about it than others.
Make sure the boot drive is set not only to master.. but master WITH slave.. and the other set to slave ..

If you use the new cable with the new drive you may have to use the Cable Select option on the drives and the appropriate cable connectors to enable both drives, then re-aquire them in the bios .... I just did this for a friend on Sunday......we insatalled a 200 gig in addition to his old 20 gig drive, .... the new one now is the master with a fresh install of windos on the first partition......220 gigs = Half of the Entire internet in his opinion....

80wire/40pin cables are keyed for master / slave. You can't turn that around like you can on old type (40 wire/40 pin) cables.
I think it was: Blue one in the board, master on grey, slave on black

Cable select on old HDD I dont even think it works, I get comp to start with the pin setting on 160 pulled out (I think out means Cable select or Master) It goes to bios, Takes forever to think about loading, then it goes to black screen asking for a boot floppy or select proper boot device, I have a 120 coming soon and was hoping to set it up so when it came I wouldnt have probs like this! Cheers, Gunny
