Can someone please tell me what the second plug is on the FX5500 Geforce video card. Is it for a second monitor or a different type of device as it is a different plug type?

Second monitor or different type monitor. It's a DVI (LCD/Plasma) connector. The other is an Analog (CRT) connector.

Thank you Weather_Man. Can you connect 2 CRT monitors using an adapter of some kind on the second plug

Usually the digital and analog parts of the DVI connector are totally functional.
You need an adapter to get the 15 pin sub-d on that one (my asus card has one in the package, so if you bought it separate from the PC, there probably will be one inside the package)
