In trying to network XP & 98 PCs I came across these notes. I hope they are of use to others.

I have not succeded yet & some things mentioned do not seem to exist on my win98 Pc.

The joys of Windows 98 ...... it's so much easier to stick XP on the 98 machine ..... then it's all done for you.

You can do a p2p connection between any two computers with a NIC. Use a cat5e crossover cable and connect the computer's NIC cards. Configure the Ip address and host name of the each computer to be different and bam, you have a p2p connection. If you're on a windows PC, make sure the workgroups are the same.

To tell you the truth, this kind of connection is really kinda stupid. Just buy a cheap switch.

If NIC is the ethernet cards I use, why then does it not work. I didd all these things, many times, and still nothing doing.                          luke

OK the problem will be with the Win98 machine ... suprise suprise.
For each computer check in the network settings (found in the control panel) are the same(more especially the 98 machine).

1. Make sure that both computers share the same WORKGROUP name.
2. Check that File and Printer sharing/QoS Packet schedualing/Client for Microsoft Networks/Internet Protocol (tcp/ip)  are all checked for each LAN connection.
3. On the Host machine make sure that Internet Connection Sharing is enabled.
4. If you have to make any changes to the above ..... restart the machine after each change.

That's it simplified ....... in practice networking a Win98 machine is a nightmare. I haven't touched 98 since XP hit the shelves.

ok so we are going direct from one PC to the other correct?

If this is so you will NEED to use a crossover cable, basically a rewired cat5 cable. Best bet is to pick on up at the local electronics store for around $10 USD.

Once you do this you will need to assign both computers an IP, typically 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2

If you are truly going from on pc to the other this is really the only way to do it without adding a router or hub. Trust me, I've been there and done that for quite a few years before we got the dsl and needed a router.

In Win XP, right click the desktop and click Properties at the bottom of the popup menu.

Click the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button.

On the general tab there, check the box next to My Network Places.

That should put the Icon on the desktop for you if you have desktop icons enabled.

found it but still nothing happening, no networking.

looks like it's eqicalent in 98 is "Network Neighbourhood"

Hopefully bit by bit all of you may get my decrepid PCs to talk.                   luke
