Stupid computers...

Well, I just upgraded my Ram from 1 Gig to 1.5 Gigs and I can't believe what happened.  Ram is the easiest thing in the world, right?  Just slide the stick into the slot, make sure the tabs are locked, then move on.

Not this time.  >:(  I installed the Ram, fired up the computer and after taking about 5 minutes to load, I had no internet.  Somehow all of my TCP/IP settings had been erased.  System Restore fixed the problem, but not before I lost a lot of hair I can't affor to lose.  ::)

Can a virus be carried on Ram...  ::) ;)
(yes, I know it cannot, that is sarcasm)

In a purposefully stupid question, if you have three sticks of different speed, you will only get the slowest speed of the bunch, right?

Right.

You did know that over 1 gb of ram can slow your system performance right?

But long load times etc are not right, something skew-if there.

Maybe if you posted details on the ram modules you have installed.... like each ones PC rating and timings.

As for the wierd boot, maybe it wasn't related to the ram installation directly, is it possible the connectors are not sitting right? I have 1 ram slot that's really dodgy, it takes a few attempts sometimes to get it seated properly or I get a no-boot. Say on first boot with the new ram, that your PC was failing due to bad contact of the installed ram, windows gets half way thru a load and POOF! .... you get a sudden poweroff that corrupts your browser as it auto loads in the startup trying to connect to the net? The mind boggles!

Slot 1 is PC2100
Slot 2 is PC2300
Slot 3 is PC3200 (the new stick)

I eventually will replace them all with PC3200...

Actually, now the thing runs like a striped ass ape.  I have no complaints whatsoever.  System Restore is a beautiful thing.  :)

One of those cases where less is more  ;)

It't be interesting to see whether you gain performance by just using the PC3200. 512Mb@3200 or 1.5Gigs@2100 - Which would win?

I'm not sure, but it seems to work nicely now.  :P

That actually depends on what kinda of memory you use and how good the CPU accesses the memory and how the OS setups the memory access.

But yeah, 1 gig is perfectly fine for the normal person...if you want to be normal.

1GB is 'normal' for a gaming spec machine... running WinXP

Win98 absolutely dies when going over 1GB RAM, as the memory mapping will do a buffer overflow

You will get better performance if you loose the PC-2100 even if its right now ;) And 1 Gig was the gaming ram, now its getting bumped to 2 gigs as BF2 is here and upcomming games such as Unreal Engine 3.0. More ram will do good and with such great prices of the stuff now it can not hurt but yes loose the Pc-2100 all its doin is slowin u way the hell down.

Windows 98 and I think 2000 and/or ME have issues with more than 1Gb of RAM. WinXP thrives on it, give it more RAM, it will be happier.

I'll be installing WinXP 64-bit when I feel it is time to do a windows installation (usually every 6 months).

Be aware that there is little driver support for 64-bit edition. Also, beware that there is NO antivirus and anti-spyware software supported for 64-bit yet. I have XP x64 and trust me when i say, there's nothing that great about it now because its too new. There are exceptions of course. for example, if you use lightwave, they have a 64-bit eidtion of that and trust me, that thing renders like crazy. But for gaming and normal day use, 64-bit has little use.

Oneof the few reasons I want 64-bit (have it, need to install) is for Far Cry 64-bit. Also, I have checked for drivers on everything I own, and only have not found driversfor my camera, which I don't need really, since I have a flash drive for it.

Oh i see. The 64-bit fary cry patch doesn't add much. In fact, you'll notice a performence decrease in benchmarks. The patch does add small elements like more birds and insects and a bit more detail. You won't notice the difference at all unless you look very very carefully.

For me, I installed it because I had XP x64 installed already for lightlwave and other 64-bit software. IMO, to go through the trouble of instaling an OS (and drivers, other software etc.) just for the far cry patch is not worth it, not even close, but if you have free time, by all means.

Well, as I said earlier, I re-install windows on average every 6 months or less, I have the total time for installation (including programs, settings, fovorites, all FS stuff not including ProjectAI, ect) less than 3 hours.

When starting from scratch, installing all of ProjectAI's official packs takes a long time......

I have a back-up computer on my network who's purpose is to crunch BOINC, and to back-up all things required for a new windows installation. Things go real quick.  :P

You aren't just a-kiddin!  I pulled that PC2100 out and you should see it fly now!  ;D
