Yes, get rid of your old Sct A board, replace it with ideally, a Sct 939 AMD 64 cpu - the more expensive, the faster! - then go for2x512MB RAM sticks.

You will get great performance from a 6600GT with such a CPU & Mobo etc.

The older SCT A CPU will simply be a bottleneck for the new card.

I'm an "Intel Man" you may say, somebody more familiar with AMD kit will no doubt put you straight. -

Congo or Dan spring to mind..... ;)

Answers

1.) I would go with dual. This is so if one should fry / malfunction your not totally screwed.

2.) Go with the new socket 955s. Great bords, and I recomend Gigabyte~Foxcom~Asus. Of course go with one that is PCI-Express X16 and you might want one that has both DDR and DDR2 RAM slots, just for the future.

3.) Cant recomend here as im an Intel guy. But the FX-55 is suppost to be "uber good" or something like that.

4.) Just get a new processer. Its good to have the latest technology, and my bord has an nforce chipset, and it seems to be nice ???

You definately want 2 sticks, and get a AMD 64 939 socket, so you can run the RAM in dural channel

Don't fill your RAM slots if you can't afford to at first.....get the biggest single stick of RAM that you can afford and this will leave open slots for expansion later on....maximize your resources when you can !

I'll have to disagree Ken, bigger sticks are generally not as good as smaller onese, and if he gets 2 that are exactly the same, he'll be able to run them in dural channel, and get more performance...

...in addittion, if he gets a dural mobo, but only one stick of ram, chances are, hes gonna buy a different stick later on, and the mobo will refuse to run either.

Yes 2 sticks  of ram no qustion, it will overclock better run dual channel. Get a 3200+ for the cpu, will oc a bit better and get a tad better perfoamnce from the get go.

on the ram question.

it all depens really. if you buy a two cards of ram for example 516mb (I dont really know the number) each it would probably be cheaper than a single 1gb card. It also depends on the manufacturer. If I were you. I would get 2x1gb out of a cheap manifacturer. 8)

cheers
