256mb PCI card?

Postby Scottler » Sat Apr 30, 2005 10:18 pm

Long story short....I've decided to not build a new box, as I've already got WAY too much on my plate as is.  I needed to spend my time and money on some more practical things...since this PC is in pristine condition (because I'm a freak when it comes to that), I might as well get some more use out of it.  lol

But I'm considering upgrading my vid card....if I can find one.  Does anyone know of a 256mb video card that's a PCI?  (No AGP slots!  :()

Thanks!
Great edit, Bob.

I've not seen any in my numerous searches with my old system ........ That doesn't mean there isn't one tucked away in some distant backwater of the web.

Either the ATI 9200/9250 or Nvidia FX5200/FX5700LE come in PCI versions. You should be able to find some in retail stores, or order online.

Scottler,

Please don't waste your money making someone else rich while they rip you off.

There is no advantage to a PCI video card even if it had 2 gigabytes of memory. The PCI bus simply hasn't got enough bandwidth to handle today's video data demands.

You need a mainboard with at least AGP on it. I don't know what CPU you have, but even modern onboard video is usually better than any PCI card.

Congo, understood....but for now, I've chosen to not upgrade anything else.  I'm not THAT displeased with my current system to be honest.  Maybe in six months or a year I'll upgrade, but right now it's just not worth the time or energy it would take for me to do it.  lol

EDIT:  I'm getting like 20-30 fps at max anyway, it's just a matter of making it a better picture.  If I were only getting like 4 fps, then I could see it...

Hi Scott,

I agree with Congo in that there is absolutely no point in getting a PCI card, no matter how much memory is has installed. PCI is, nowadays, no match for any game, espeically not Flight Sim. The bus speed is far too slow and PCI cards have crap specs.

Time to correct a couple false info:

A PCI nvidia 5200 will beat any integrated solution unless its a very recent one in the intel 925 chipsets. Seeing as you don't have that chipset, a PCI 5200 card will do much better than any integrated soltuon.

I'd get the 128mb 5200 over the 9200 b/c the 5200 is a dx9 card and the 9200 is not. Don't fret over memory. Keep in mind the 6600 gt has 128mb of memory and can beat a 9800 XT (with 256mb of mem) handsdown in almost any benchmark.

As for upgrading, I'd save my money and upgrade the mothrboard.
