My PC has two 80Gig each EIDE HDs. My OS (WinXP) is installed in the Master. I would like to install a larger (120+Gig) Serial ATA HD. My questions are:
1. Can I use the SATA drive as my main drive?
2. Do I have to do anything to the two existing drives?
3. Can I just transfer my OS to the new drive or do I have to load it using the CD?

2-No, some applications may need to be reinstalled.
3-Yes, but thats not the best way. You will have to reinstall it via the CD for the best stability.

OK, after I install the SATA drive and get it connected what do I do next? Will there be an installation CD? or do I have to make changes in the BIOS?
Further, do I have to do in partitioning, formatting, etc. with the SATA drive?
By the way, my mobo supports SATA, my OS is WixXP.

SATA HD's are no different from eIDE HD's except the connection and no master slave setting in terms of install.
You may want to go into the BIOS to set the primary boot hard drive as the SATA one also.
Windows should automatically reconigze the device and you can format it from windows if you want.
The XP installation Cd can also format it and installl a new clean XP os onto it too.

Posted: Tue Apr 05, 2005 8:22 amEven though it's better to install a fresh copy of the operating system, if you don't want to install everything you can also use Norton Ghost to copy the old disk over the new.
