apologies if this question has appeared on here before.............

I am embarrased to ask but when win xp auto downloads winxp updates (namely sp2) it then tells you that this download is now ready for installation. where on the hard drive is the file stored prior to installation.........I imagine its in a temp folder but exactly where??  :-X

is there a little exclamation point down in your system tray? (Bottom right hand corner?)

if there is click it open, and it should let you tell it to install.

Also sometimes if you tell it to shutdown it will automatically apply updates before shutting down...

LOL you seem to be.  I too personally wouldnt think of having xp without sp2 Sure there are some issues but the pros far outway the cons to me anyway.

I'm not sure, but maybe the folder you refer to is [system partition]:\program files\windowsupdate\temp
The WindowsUpdate folder is hidden so you'll have to enable display of hidden objects.

Hi to everyone...........

I am undecided on what sp2 has to offer as despite fridaychild`s explanation I cannot find this blasted file on my pc. I have the file options set to see all hidden files and still it evades me.....so for me (at present anyway) it sp1

Maybe try this? Control Panel/Appearance and Themes/Folder Options. Click the View tab, scroll down under Hidden files and Folders and uncheck the box Hide Protected Operating System Files.

I am still having difficulties in finding this blasted download, but my pc is running ok without it and I have some 55gb free space on my hard drive so I am not to worried about it , it is blooming annoying though .

Not sure if this would make a difference, but does the user account you're working under have administrative rights? Just a thought.

It must be another folder then.
Next time Microsoft releases a critical update, I'll check out and let you know.

I hid an update but want to install it later?

You can install all hidden updates by opening System, and, on the Automatic Updates tab, clicking Restore hidden updates. (If you are running Windows 2000, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Automatic Updates.) The next time you connect to the Internet, Windows will check for all applicable updates for your computer, old or new.

To choose which hidden updates you want to install, go to the Windows Update Web site(http://www.microsoft.com/) and click Custom Install. In the left pane, under Other Options, click Restore hidden updates and then select the updates you want to download and install.

Just another thought.

Turn off your Auto updates and go download this file.

It's the standalone full SP2 installation.

Save it to a safe place for later use in case you need to re-install at a later date. (on CD-ROM or another hard disk or partition.) SP2 is standalone and should be run directly after installing windows XP on a formatted hard disk.

It also installs just fine over all previous updates, but I don't recommend this.

So far the only updates I'm aware of to SP2 have only to do with certain hardware or software configurations which are causing problems, and the majority of people can turn off the potentially dangerous auto updates.

When you originally got the update, it would have put an entry in your registry and waited for you to confirm the installation. You have hit the wrong button accidently and you have lost it. It will be there somewhere in a temp file, (unless one of your file cleaners has wiped it!) but I doubt that it will ever be of any use, as it would be a custom version based on what the update site decided you needed.

Since that program has failed to restart, the "custom SP2 install won't work anymore in my opinion as the registry tag is either corrupt or missing I believe.

The main benefit of WinXP SP2 (suitably configured) is the most stable operating system I've witnessed in 16 years of computing. nuff said
