Hi all

I have Norten Internet Security 2005 which also has Norten Antivirus and Norten AntiSpam. The thing is that i ran a scan the other day and it detected 5 threats but i stopt it half way through the scan because my pc was making funny noises at me!!

Any hoo i re ran the scan again and it found 5 threats again as i suspected it would. The thing is that it just skiped the Quarientine and delete stage and would only let me select finished which means none of the files have been deleted or quarintined  >:( I rebooted and tryed again and the same thing happend

Also for some reason i keep getting a message from Outlook Express saying that it is not the defult mail client and that it should be made the defult mail client. Well i looked through the options and cant see anything to do with how to set it as the dufult mail client. Also when i click add/recived it says that there is a pop3 errorr or something like that  ???

Last thing is that when i first turn my PC on it makes some sort of wired noise like when you put in a CD and you hear it wherring only 10 times louder (you can hear it outside the room with the door closed..the doors are chunky fire doors  :o and i'm guessing it might be the hardrive or something like that but i cant get the case off because it has what looks ike screws only without the top bit where you put the screwdriver (hope that makes sense i'll get a pic if i can).

Can anyone help me sort out my PC which is crying in agony?? Also the warrinty ran out at christmas so that'll be why everythings going wrong

Thanks

Stiz

Don't know about Norton antivirus. I had that and Mcaffee on my computer. I got infected by some ad ware that basically blocked my access to both and locked the settings so I couldn't use them. Internet stopped working and I had to remove both. I suggest downloading some anti virus oftware and see if that helps. Here's some I use (careful though, always check what you download, read user opinions and reviews, some install adware/spyware and then remove it to make it look like they've done a good job). Here are some links:

www.grisoft.com - AVG anti-virus scanner
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html - Spybot search and destroy
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ - Ad-Aware spyware removal
http://www.zonelabs.com/ - freeware firewall (just included because when my others got infected, they stopped the internet, this one seems to be holding out well)

The noise from your comupter does sound like either a hard drive failing or a fane failing. I'd advise you to not use it for long periods as you might burn out your hard drive or CPU.
Best to wait for someone moreknowledgeable to answer or
take it to a specialist and get it looked at (hey, its not great but its better than losing all your data  ;D)

As for making Outlook the default client.  Go to "Control Panel" and select "Internet Options".  It's under the "Programs" tab.  Just select  Outlook wherever it applies.  As to the whirring noise, that sounds like a hard drive problem.  Could also be a optical drive if you have a CD in one of your drives.  As for the possibility of a fan.  If it does it when you first boot up and then quits about the time you get to the desktop, then it most likely isn't a fan.  If you pop off the side of the case you can try to isolate the noise when you boot up.,

noise is worn bearings in the harddisk... or problems with the motor that drives the disks.

Outlook gives you pop3 errors because it cannot connect to your POP3 (this is your mail server, where your email is sent to) server. There is a chance youc ould be using a different protocal which in that case, outlook needs to be re configured.

As  for nortan, I have that and it has given me no problems. I suggest you insert the nortan cd into your cd drive and boot with it in there. This brings you to a special mode outside of windows so you can run nortan effecticely.

Than you can use the diagnostic mode to fix viral threats.

erm nope..the grenades as long with TNT and hammers where suggestions on how to get my case of the PC.

Anyhoo i reinstalled Nortern after getting rid of the viruses with AVG. I then cleared out my hard drive of all the things i dont want anymore. I then defraged twice so it runs fine....for now anyway.

Would it be a good idea to take the case off and blow the case out with air to clean the inside??

Thanks
