Well as of today we now have highspeed cable internet access.  Only problem is it seems to run about the same speed as the dial up did.  It is connected using the ethernet port.  It also has a USB cable and im wandering if switching it to the USB would be faster.  I can download things about the same speed i always have which is about 5.3 kbs.  Having never had highspeed.  What is would be the normal speed?  i know it should more then double it ???

I can't say for sure what the problem is, but a cable modem should run much, much faster than your dial-up connection, have you disconnected the dial-up connection? Because it sure sounds to me like it isn't using the cable modem at all, there should be no comparison between cable and dial-up.

Well the dial up was disconnected.  In fact the 56k modem has been taken out.  All the dial up programs have even been deleted.  I tried the help line but was on hold for over an hour.  Finaly just gave up.  Still can not seem to solve the problem.  Hopfully ill get threw to someone soon.

No networks that i know of.  The port it is connected to the guy said it was an ethernet.  For some reason im guessing it might not be.  I always remember it showing up as a LAN modem.  Could that be the problem?     I connect to everything but just dont have the speed i should be getting ???

Is the service supposed to be turned on today? I know I was able to connect to the dsl line that I got back in october a few days before it was supposed to be activated, but it was at much slower rates..

Glad to hear.

BTW, do not use the USB connection. USB internet is horrible.

Its an external modem with ethernet and USB.  The tech did all the configuring and its connected with the ethernet.  I can go anywhere and do anything but the connection is about the same speed as the old dial up.  something isnt right and im tired of being on hold trying to call support.  Going to try tommarow if it doesnt work.  Its always connected though and havent lost it at all.  Ive looked at the settings and its supposidly running at almost 2mbps         its really running at around 56k :-/

The site that I linked to you on my first pos has some speed tests that show the speed you are connected to the internet try one of them and tell us the result.

The most significant parameter for TCP/IP tuning is the TCP Receive Window (RWIN). Most other tuning attempts usually do little or no benefit and may actually cripple proper TCP/IP connectivity as exemplified by so called MTUTweak programs that aim to optimize the line for dial-up use. If you have previously used one of these programs, I suggest you remove the registry changes done by them. Typically, these programs lower your MTU (maximum transmission unit) to 576, reduce TCP Window Size to as low as 2144 (an absolute no no for broadband connections)

PS: see the Windows optimizations for broadband connections (RWIN).

Did you ever tweak your dial up connection?

Triple-7:

I'm no expert but talking from experience my cable service is provided by (Road Runner) Time Warner Cable TWC) - San Diego, for a monthly fee of course.  The service cable was connected to a splitter. which supplied  signal to my two TV sets and the modem. The modem in turn is connected (RJ45) to a router for my two PCs. TWC, as part of the service, provided the modem. I activated the system myself using the User Manual they provided including a start up CD. Whatever  problems I had with my internet or e-mail, I could  always count on the service provider tech-support to solve it.  Hope this helps.

What sort of ratio is your ISP running ....... 20/1 .....50/1? If its a cheap package they could be running as many as 200/1. Thats 200 users for every server and thats where the speed drops off ... especially if you go online at peak times.
Get hold of tech support and check that all your settings are correct. If they are then check the above.

Ok...Finaly got through to tech support.  They said it should have already kicked in but some people have had it take up to 3 days before full activation.  Even though it says its full its really not.  So waiting :'(

But ran the speed test.  Its running at like 6kbs so at least its slightly faster then the dial up for now.

If you ever have a recording while on hold it might help to be rude.  I got tired of hearing the "your call is important to us" message after like 1/2 hour.  Started getting mad and yelling into the phone even though no one was there.  said "if my call was that @#$@# important then why the @$%% am i on hold"    not 5 seconds later i had a tech.   might have just been a coincidence       or maby they were acualy listening :P
