CPU 500mhz,  Win98, 256ram, 40gb. CDrom & CD R-Rw

Suddenly the master CDRom did not show on explorer.

On Boot-up both CDroms are regognised
CNTR Pnl System Hardware shows both cd roms.

Rebooted 4 -5 times, used install New Hardware, nouse.

Reinstalled Win98, but no change.

Installed a new CDRom, but still the same as above

Where do I go wrong?        thanks

I am thinking your Motherboards IDE cable thing is broken, that or a bad cable..... Dont go on my advice, just a guess! Cheers, Gunny

Hmm, cable failure is very rare. Sounds like your CD-ROM has packed up! Can you find someone who will let you fit theirs to your machine to prove the fault?

My computer has one of those multi-card readers, and sometimes it disappears, I tried checking wires and cables and going into the device manager, rebooting and all that but nothing seemed to work, then one day it just showed back up working just fine.

Ozzy,
I bought a new one to try and this does not show up, but it shows up on another PC.

Now you might want to take a look at that cable.

IF our friend here had windows XP there are many diagnostic things that can be used to find out where it went..;-)

Perhaps it's on vacation?

I believe everyone else has wrapped up what I would have guessed though..so no answer from me..

You haven't by any chance used any programs like end-it-all at all have you?

I remember my friend tried using one of these programs before running his games and it made his CD-rom dissapear too.

I would go into your BIOS too and double check it is actually picking it up properly.

Could be your motherboard, I once had a similar issue and that is what it was.

Thank you friends,
But do'nt forget that both CDRoms show in the start up Bios, and the Cntrl Pnl, System, Hardware.

Even so just for interest I tried a new cable.

I also bought a new CDRom. & works on another PC.

Yet only one, the slave shows in Win98 explorer.

I changed them over & it is the Master that does not show up in Win98 explr.

I found instructions on this "Cdrom missing in Windows" in troubleshoot of :-
   http://www.mesich.com/cdrommissing.html
But unfortunately they do not relay to my Win98, must be for another version.

Any other help welcomed.

Hae you ever used/installed/uninstalled any CD-burning software? IE especially roxio CD programs?

If so I found this site:
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=9924
I know some of the people on it talk about xp, so I'm not sure how this would work/help..

i had the same problem on my old system.  Messed with it for days then gave up and bought a new one.  It wouldnt go eather.  Took it to a friend to look at and turns out from where i had it worked on a couple months before the tech managed to bend a couple of the pins on the mainboard.  all it took was some moving and it shorted out.  they had to be replaced but after that it worked fine.  Might start by having them checked ;)  especialy if you have unhooked and rehooked the cable

Hi have you tried moving the jumpers from I assume master on one and slave on the other to "CS" ( cable select) on both this way the m/board sorts out slave / master. Might be worth a try, good luck Chris
