Linking PCs By USB?

I thinking of getting a laptop for work at school. A cheap used one of course so it probably won't have an ethernet port. I'm hoping to find one with USB. I'm wondering if it's possible to transfer files from one computer to another by linking them with a USB cable. If so, how would I go about it?

I know that it is possible, but couldn't tell you how to go about it.

Another way of doing it is that laptops *usually* have PCMCIA ports/slots inwhich you can fit a card. If you have a free slot you can get a PCMCIA ethernet card for around #30USD... :-) then you can hook your sytem up to a network no matter where you go..:)

Just my thoughts, and nothing more..;-)

I thought most laptops had ethernet, as they are, after all, a mobile computer.   ???

I was getting an old one. Some older ones don't have them.

What OS are you using?  Here's a guide for DCC in Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=814982

Likely Windows 2000 or XP if I can.  Some used ones only have Windows 98 on them which is notoriously unstable.

I'll hang onto that guide. It's just what I'm looking for.
