Opinions on my graphic card choices please

Postby Gary R. » Sat Sep 11, 2004 1:05 am

nVidia 5700 @ 256 megs, Radeon 9600 XT @ 128 megs, or Radeon 9800 @ 256 megs?  Currently have radeon 9200 se.  Don't like it.  Had bad luck with radeons in the past but owned two nvidias and never had a problem at all. Which one of my three choiices would you guys recommend?

1.R9800 256MB (assuming it is not an SE model)
2.R9600xt 128MB
3.FX5700 256MB

That is the performance order.

Generally avoid SE models of the Radeon range, they are low bandwidth budget models, this means low performance.

None of the above. If your looking for low cost preformance, go with the Geforce 6600GT. The AGP version should be comming out soon. It's been getting very good reviews. It's rumored to blow all Radeon 9000 and Geforce FX series cards away. It's also supposed to out preform ATI's X600. It will retail for $200US. It may not be as good as the 6800 or X800 but it's pretty close for the cost.

Or just wait a month for the 6600GT - much quicker than any 9800 and cheaper!  ;)

Well, I'm rather limited to what I cantrade up to for the money I have. With trade on my 9200 I can have the 5700 nVidia for $60. $80 and up for the 9600xt or the 9800 256.  I guess what it reall boils down to is will the 5700 nVidia allow me to get my sliders far enough right so I can have my mesh detail uusefull enough for navigation?  I don't need full time outrageous 30 + fps. I'd be happy to average 24 fps and am willing to tolerate high teens on final at jfk, ord, atl or other busy ones. So, will the 5700 allow me that given my system specs below?

I have a 9800XT.  With the machine specs on the trailer below.... I'd be VERY happy to even get solid high teens in those short final conditions at a big airport.  When the heavy AI is around.... it is more about the CPU and the RAM and the fsb than it is the video card, me thinks.

I run most sliders maxed... but not all.

The 5700 is not the best card by Nvidia, what about a 5900, these can be tickled to a 5950 apparently. My mate has the 5900, he plays Quake online & he is really chuffed with it . He has had 2 radeon 9800, both could not handle it & were barbequed!. I am really chuffed with my FX5600 ultra. If I had the money I would go for a 6800ultra. apparently the 12 pipe 6800 can be tickled to open the other 4 pipes, which would make it a 6800GT. The information I have provided is only heresay, but reliable heresay!!!!
MSI K72N delta, 1 gig 333 RAM, Athlon 2.6 clocked to 2.25, 120gigHDD0 Service Pack 2, 80gigHDD1 Service pack 1, GeForce 5600 ultra, Antec plusview server case, lots of fans, lights & UV illuminatory devices!

i just bought myself a radeon 9800 xt  (the ultimate 9800 ;D), and i love it!!!!

i searched a LOT for the latest video card (it's very hard to keep track of them as a new one comes out every week or so...) and found  the 9800 xt to be the best bang for my buck...

my graphics in FS are almost maxed out and she's still running with good above-15 fps

the thing is... if you buy a mid-end card now, you'll probably regret it later when an even more demanding game comes your way...

happened to me...

anyways... my two cents here

Well the 9800 in general has already become a mid-range card (or at least well on its way) and is sinking on the list almost daily.

ANY piece of hardware that you buy for a computer is headed for the junkpile the minute you hand that cash to the clerk.
