My failing memory...!

Postby Fozzer » Mon Aug 09, 2004 12:34 pm

Hi Lads...!

Have a quick shufty at this, (courtesy of Aida32)...>>>

http://www.webattack.com/get/aida32.shtml

Image

(Note my system specs at the bottom of this post...)

Out of my total system memory of 768 Mb, (The max on Win '98SE), 692+Mb is being used, leaving me with only 72Mb free... :o...!

After a clean boot-up, and a short flight, my FS 2002 flight is occasionally interrupted by the dreaded Windows "Blue Screen" report: "You are running short of memory, and Norton cannot give you protection"...(Including my wiener I wonder?... :-[....)...LOL..LOL..LOL...!

I can often start the day with around 25% of my memory taken up with Windows resources, (which is normal), but after a couple of hours of flying around, almost all of my memory is used up, and it's not dripping out of my engine... ::)...!

I am running FS 2002, (Oh joy! None of this FS 2004 stuff!), full screen, with all programs running in the background, (including Norton), shut down except: FS 2002, Explorer, Grabclipsave (obviously!), and Systray.

A regular Norton system scan, (Find and fix problems), reports no problems with my system, (Big sigh of relief, as always!)... 8)...!

So...

What on earth can it be that is ALWAYS eating such vast amounts of my flippin' system memory, and interrupting my California flights... ::)...?

Note that my actual flight is not de-graded by this shortage of memory, (my frame rate is constant at (locked) 30 FPS with EVERYTHING maxed), it's just that this flippin' reminder pops up every now and again to worry me... >:(...!

Some annoying little gremlin in my computer is chewing away at my installed memory, in a similar way that "old age" is chewing away at my feeble brain... ;D...LOL...!

...any suggested cures?....(Note: My brain is beyond economical repair!)... ;)...LOL...!

Cheers Lads... ;D...!

Paul.

P.S. Don't even think about mentioning installing Windows XP...Trust me... 8)...LOL...!!

Seems to me you have WAY TOO MUCH crap running in background. Have you considered using FS-GS? Mike would walk you through the process of re-configuring your services so that you fly with only the bare essentials ONLY when you want to fly, any other time, It's setup normally.

When my 1GB system is config'd normally, it uses about 4-500MB at idle. When I'm in "Flying Mode" it's only using 150-250 MB. That leaves FS with roughly 800MB

Thank about it. Costs about $75

This is the "freebee" program I use to reduce recources running in the background.
It sits in my Start/Settings/Control Panel....>>>

It's been a while since I've used Win98. I believe There should be more services. You have a printer? Where's the Spooler. You have a network, where are the Net services. Maybe that's a list of what Windows will allow you to change. Or, like it's labeled, just some services where you can choose to start.  I'm sure there are more, which you need to run a computer for various tasks, but a lot which you don't need while flying. I don't print anything while flying, so I shutdown my print spooler.

But like I said before, it's been a while.

Are you using FSautostart? From what I'm told, Win2K doesn't manage memory as well either. FSautostart optimizes your memory before starting FS. Don't know if it works on 98 though.

Fozzer (+ Skittles).......

I don't know too much about this stuff.... but if I remember correctly I have heard of discussions of "memory leaks" occuring in Win 98.  What it seems to mean is that instead of being cleared of old used infomation.... it stays in there...eatiing up your RAM over time.

This might be it.

Also as to FSAutostart... it requires the Microsoft .NET framework be installed on the machine.  I think that rules out W98..... but I'm not sure.

Someone with more knowledege will liekely answer all this soon.   ;)

best,

............john

Hi lads...!
Many thanks for all your replies... ;D...!

All your comments seem to reflect the problems I'm having.
Over a period of time my computer memory seems to leak away, (I have a similar personal problem. I now have to sleep on my back or else my memory leaks out of my earoles... ::)...), so your experiences with Win '98 memory management may be correct... ;)...!

Hi Congo: I've got the Win XP disks, but I would rather install it on a clean hard drive, and at the mo' I'm reluctant to loose all my existing files.
Also, I may not be able to cope with all those funny "blue" icons in Win XP.... :'(....!
LOL...!
Also, I'm an avid user of lots of old computer games, (including DOS games), dating back to the year dot, and I'm not sure if XP will run them.. ::)...!

Cheers all... ;D...!

Paul.

Just had a check, and after a days chuffin' around, my memory has dropped back to 75 Mb again... >:(...!

So, it looks like a reluctant change over to Windows XP...(I can hear Bill Gates chuckling).... >:(...!
LOL...!

Strange Fozzer...

I run Win 98SE for many of the same reasons as you...and rarely see a memory error unless I've been doing a bunch of weird and wonderful tasks all at the same time.

My system has only 512MB installed...I've always heard that 98 cannot reliably use more RAM than that...something about memory errors occuring if you go above that point.

Hi Silver...!
FANTASTIC to come across another Win '98SE enthusiast.... 8)...!
There aren't many of us left now.... :'(...!
We must stick together... ;)...!
LOL...!

I did a bit of checking into how much memory could be installed in Win '98, and GOD said, "768 meg, my old Mate"... 8)...!
So, as I was getting a bit short of memory, (I thought), I stuck another stick of 256 Mb in, (loadsa money)... :'(...!
So, maybe I should remove this latest stick, and give it back to GOD, and ask for a re-fund... ::)...!
LOL...!
See what 'appens then... ;)...!

Cheers Silver...!

Of course, if there is some peculiar, incontrovertible reason why you must stick to Windows 98, you should simply remove the physical RAM (back to 512MB)and put it somewhere where it will be appreciated..... And under all other circumstances you should upgrade to Windows XP without delay. ( You've had those XP disks for ages!) Windows XP is not just another operating system, it is a completely new way of life. With Windows XP, all your problems will be gone for ever and eternal life will be yours for the taking. Oh no, wait, that

Hi Paul...!
Read all that...got a headache now... :'(...!
I think I will go back to my Sinclair Spectrum again.
The memory was fixed in that:
64K, of which 48K was available to the user, (me), but don't get messing with the System Variables area....!
No problemo...!

Cheers Mate... ;D...!

SINCLAIR !  :o

I had a number of Sinclair ZX-81's that I cobbled into various states of "computerness" with RAM and interfaces and all manner of stuff.  WOW.  I had forgotten about them until you brought up that name, Fozzer.

I had one rig up to 64K of RAM, a parallel interface, full sized keyboard, monitor driver, and a morse code generator/decoder for HAM radio use.

Thanks.  Guess my memory is failing too  ;).

best,

Foz,

Answer to your problem.....

Decide which hobby you want, then trade in your bike on some reasonable 'puter stuff, or trade in your sim-gear and join Franky CHILI  and nitro Nori....

You can't have it both way (unless your better off than me...LOL . ;D
