What are the pros and cons for each?

if your looking for gaming go for AMD if your looking for applications such as video editing pentium is your choice

As said, supposedly AMD64 for gaming and P4 for video editing/ graphical work.  I cannot give you hard evidence though as this is only what I have read in reviews.

I reckon best bet is what ever you can get cheaper go for.  As long as you get as higher spec as you can afford I really doubt you would notice much difference between the two.

I've switched back and forth from AMD to Intel over the years. I cannot say one is better than the other, just different. At one point, I wanted dual processors. I had to go Intel w/ Win2k.  On another comp. I used an overclocked AMD. I was happy with both.

Basically, I look at what I want the machine for. Then determine the best Motherboard. Some motherboards work better with Intel, others with AMD.

My neighbor and I had our computers in my place. We always had competition with our machines. Didn't matter if he had Intel or AMD, he new the overclocking better than I and smoked me every time.

However, I do agree with the orginial answer. I do find I prefer AMD for gaming, and Intel for work.

AMD pros:
- Cheaper compared to an P4 of the same performance, which is the main reason people choose AMD.
- Bus architecture of the once-record-holder DEC Alpha (which at its release did beat EVERY pentium) has better bandwith and multiprocessor capabilities.

- AMD 64 is a TRUE 64 bit processor, the Intel one is restricted to 48 bit internally
- Overclocking tends to be more effective if you know which ring on the silicium you have (letter codes).


In the end it's the optimalisations in the software that make the differnce. FarCry runs better on the AMD64 than the 64 bit Intel, because of code optimalisation. Same probably goes for Flight Simulator

How cool are Pentiums? I know my XP2800 runs quite hot it idles at 38-40 and maxes at 47-50 depending on ambient room temperature.

I was impressed when i built my mates AMD64 though his runs a lot cooler than my cpu does so I am guessing AMD have done somthing to try and address this issue.

Always wondered what temps Pentiums run at though  ???

Both the P4 and the AMD64 have a heat spreader. That's a plate of metal that takes some of the workload for the CPU cooler away by making the hot surface larger, as the aluminium (or special alloy) has a maximum amount of heat that can be transferred for each square inch of surface.

P4 maxes at around 50C-60C if not overclocked. Temperature limit is around 75C-80C

AMD does 50C-70C depending on the type (newer ones are cooler). Maxes out at 85C for normal and 95C for 'tropical' variation. The 95C variant is quite rare in holland (and probably western europe)
