That sounds like a bad installation of DX.
Try this
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=626

Then re-install DX.

thanx for the reply hi-d...went to the guru site, but too nervous to uninstall dx and then reinstall....instructions say to have window 2000 xp disc handy,,,,,i aint got that!...oem on my machine...so, now what???...anyhow, i think this may have something to do with  me as the "user" no longer recognized for this software, fs9, so...could it be that i should delete the "no disc" option and go back to disc 4???....i've been at this all day, since 8 o clock this am!!!!!.....any other thoughts??..bottom line...basic sound problem...tried everything i know, now starting to grab at thin air.....

If you get DX9.0b (even if you have it already) and install it again, it may overwrite the originals and fix the problem.

It does overwrite itself, you can't uninstall it to my knowledge.

Be brave, I've never seen DX ask for the windows disk, what are they on about?

Ah, the old Clean Boot Trick! I was gonna suggest taking your shoes right off! I suppose the guy from Microsoft was Tip-toeing around the problem.... Maybe I should just put a sock in it before I put my foot in my mouth... ;D
