Fozzer in de fraggin' mood...!

Postby Fozzer » Sat Apr 10, 2004 6:09 am

Yesterday, Friday, nice day, I thought, "I know what I'll do". "I'll de-frag my 20 gig, main hard drive".
It hasn't been done for over two years now.... :o...!
So...
Its now 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
Press the "De-Frag" button.
1% it says...
I eat may late Friday dinner.
Have a snooze for an hour or two.
Wake up, go outside and mow the lawn in the back garden.
Dig up the vegetable patch ready for planting.
Trim the hedges.
Mow the front garden
Pop in for tea. Corned beef and tomato sandwiches, Cups of tea.
Pop to Sainsburys to shop for Saturday's dinner.
Back home.
Turn on the radio.
Listen to the radio news for one and a half hours.
Have another snooze.
Watch Blade Runner on video, (2 hours).
Make another pot of tea.
Read the latest Pilot magazines.
...Thinks..."Must be getting near bed-time now"...?

...DING...!

Look at the clock...nine thirty PM.
...'puter says..."de-frag finished. Six and a half hours, Sir"
So...!
I think to myself...as I do... ;)...!
All you lot out there with your one hundred and twenty gigabyte hard drives, what will you be doing while your hard drive de-frags itself.....?
...Round the World trip in a bath tub...?
...A trip to Mars and back...?
...Discover the meaning of life...?
...Traverse the M42 motorway from one end to the other...?
...Find yourself at the end of the queue at the Post Office...?

or what else...?

...answers on a roll of toilet paper... :o...!

LOL...!

Cheers all... ;D...!

Paul.

P.S. could this be a good reason for having a small hard drive...?
LOL...!

That ain't right fozzer.

You got something wrong maybe?

I remember some really old slow pc's that would take a long time. But that was a while ago.

Are you using 100 or 133 ata speed transfer rate and a 80 wire IDE cable? Is the PC configured to use UDMA transfers?

Or is it really just the worst example of a totally abused hard disk ever seen?   ;D

If he hasn't done it for 2 years I feel that is a respectable time.
I did my 60Gig last week (had to do something whilst I was offline), and that took 8 hours, and I only hadn't done it for 3 months!!!!!!
I've since cleared up my drive and put lots of stuff safely on CDs out of the way. I had over 2 CDs worth of FS9 downloads I hadn't touched, and another CD of FS2k2 stuff that I should have backed up ages ago!!!
Oops ;D

...Traverse the M42 motorway from one end to the other...?

no ones ever done that and lived to tell about it. Most get too old only halfway through the trip :)

The reason the de-frag took so long is that it was left for 2 years.

Actually...
...sitting in my deck chair in the garden watching my runner beans grow from seed up to picking time, is much more enjoyable, and certainly quicker, than de-fraggin' my bleedin' hard drive... ::)...!

lol...sucks to be you....

I can usually get my 120GB, and my 40GB in less than an hour...

what rpm is your's?

both mine are 7200 and that does seem to make a difference in speed when defragging...

Oops ;D

If you removed all those files it will probably need defragging again. ::)

The time it takes might depend on your OS. I believe Foz is on Win98 SE & I'm on WinMe. I've got lazy nowadays but used to defrag every week whether it needed it or not. I use Norton Utilities Speed Disk. It usually takes 5 hours for my 40 GB HD.

Remember to disable any scheduled tasks & anti-virus applications before doing the defrag. I also shut down all background applications with EndItAll 2. http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/

PS. Emptying the Recycle Bin can also recover a lot of wasted disk space.

The disk cleanup feature of windows should also remove unwanted stuff in the temp folders, and recycle bin...
