9800 pro problems... help anybody

Postby SkyPilot » Sat Feb 07, 2004 7:38 pm

I have installed an ATI Radeon 9800 pro card in my HP Pavilion system and have had nothing but problems.  It occurs mainly wihile running FS9 but not usually running other programs except my Windows Media DVD (no picture but plays audio.  I have reset BIOS back to onboard graphics card (SiS 650) It runs ok but just back to slower FPS and poorer graphics.  Is this something as simple as the wrong card? I have updated downloaded and otherwise replaced all the drivers from ATI website with no success in resolving the problem

If anyone has had similar problems with this, please respond.  The Best Buy guy who looked at my system said something about nvidea FX 5600 as possible fic as ATI and Microsoft do not always work well with each other.

Skypilot,

Hi and welcome to SimV.

If you could describe the "problems" that you are experiencing.... that would help a lot.

Lock n' Load huh?

That's how I feel every time HP PC's get mentioned...   ;D

You could try reinstalling the sim.

Failing that, Post in everything you know about your HP.

The PC freezing is quite ironic due to being caused by cooling and driver conflicts. May sure you have enough air around you PC.

JBaymore,

I have a AMD 2000xp 512meg ddr 2700 7200 rpm ata133 HDD and a GF5600 ultra 256meg ddr graphics card and get frame rates of 25 fps plus depending on scenery  AA turn on triliner filtering antiscopic filtering on etc. so with you P4 2.4 you should be getting way more.

Dubster,

Yeah.... that is what I think.... but 7 months of fiddling has not produced results.

BTW...... the issue is settings...... I am running everything maxed.  Cloud draw distance and view distance at midrange.... clouds at very dense.  And AI is 100%.  That is the way the designers intended the sim to be experienced..... so that is what I am trying to achieve.  AA on the card at 4x and ansio at 8X , screen at 1024x768x32, 75Hz.

Where do you run your settings?

best,

Hell of a system.  It is highly unlikely to be your graphics card or PC or cooling.

" I am running everything maxed.  Cloud draw distance and view distance at midrange.... clouds at very dense.  And AI is 100%.  That is the way the designers intended the sim to be experienced..... so that is what I am trying to achieve.  AA on the card at 4x and ansio at 8X , screen at 1024x768x32, 75Hz."

If you can put aside frame rate fixation, try 16 color depth, 4X FSAA and AAF, Quality Texture and MipMap.
App settings mid range all or default and 24 fps you might solve the problem.  If not; what would you be willing to sell your inadequate 9800 for?

Designers have never said their products are to be maxed in settings.  None.

I have the ATI 9800XT installed on a Intel P4 2.6ghz, 512mb rdram, win XP. I have no complaints whatsoever with frame rates. I play the game in 1600x1200 32 bit with 4x AA and 8x AF.  Looks spectacular. Here's my problem. For some reason when I use the "Create a Flight" option the game will routinely crash to desktop. No other mode causes this. How do you explain that?

Bowflex,

Can you do a test for me PLEASE?  Our systems are pretty darn close in specs.  (What is your front side buss speed?)

Go into settings.  Max absolutely everything...all sliders maxed, all checkboxes checked.  Set your sight distance and cloud distance to about midrange on the available settings.  Set cloud density to very dense.  Set weather rate of change to the max.  Set weather to the "gathering storms" scenario.  Set your AI traffic to 100%.  Set screen resolution to 1024x768x32 bit.

Set time of day to noon.  Set the date to January 1, 2004.  Set aircraft to default Cesna 172, 2D panel.  Go to Seattle / Tacoma and load the default flight from there.  Sitting on the runway ready for takeoff right as you "appear" at the airport....... what are your framerates?

Then.....take off and do a standard circuit and land back at  the same runway you took off from.  At about 800-1000 feet MSL on short final....what are your framerates?

Do you get any "stutter" effects (short little pauses in the display) on takeoff or short final?

I am REALLY curious as to what you get with this test.  Thanks.

best,

......................john

Hey John,

I know from reading your posts that you like to test your system based on sliders being maxed and the game in a default, stock situation.
