Chipset drivers

I don't have any intalled, I dont think (it has been a while since I had formatted my HD) But I am not sure what they do ar anything... will I get better performance with them?
So, what do they do?

I'm not any kind of techie, but from reading an awful lot from Tom's Hardware Guide I understand the chipset is essentially your CPU. Your's is a P4, and has (I understand) a northbridge (the main processor) and a southbridge that control the computer's functions. If Intel has released an upgraded chipset driver, it's generally a good idea to apply it. Your signature says you overclocked your's...not sure what effect that might have with respect to flight sim performance. Make sure the updated drivers are actually for your P4.....regards

Ok, the chipset drivers are usually on a CD you get with your computer or mainboard.
They include drivers for IDE transfer,(HDD and CD), VGA (video, not the video graphics chip driver, but the AGP bus interface, critical to graphics performance.), onboard sound, onboard networking chips, USB interface, etc. etc.
Windows will attempt to load drivers for these subsystems whether you run the setup disc or not. But, each CHIPSET has optimised drivers for them, so it's important to install them.
If you don't have a setup disc, you need to identify your EXACT mainboard and try to download the files from the manufacturers website.
If your system is a propriety brand such as Compaq, those drivers are usually included in the system restore setup discs.
DO NOT INSTALL SYSTEM DRIVERS UNLESS YOU ARE SURE THEY ARE CORRECT! or I'll come over and eat all your food and drink your beer.

Windows, (98 anyway) will happily run without mobo drivers (.inf files) however, you lose performance, not to mention hardware problems such as USB ports not working correctly.
I've tried a bare (Win 98, nothing else except cfs2) hard drive in my new machine, CFS2 ran happily at 12fps once I'd installed Nvidias drivers, Once I applied the SIS mobo drivers I got an average 55fps. QED.
